Watercolor on paper signed upper right U ... Maskov. Maskov was a Russian artist of the first half of the twentieth century. Originally from a peasant family from Volgograd, in 1900 he moved to Moscow to study at the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture where he met Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov, exponents of Russian impressionism. He was part of the group "Fante di Quadri" or a group of young artists who had as their objective to renew Russian painting inspired by artists such as Van Gogh, Cezanne and Matisse. The artist always remained in the figurative field even if his works are characterized by a strong and bright chromatic range.

ILYA MASHKOV (1881-1944) Still life with watermelons, melon, grapes, apples and pears oil on canvas 120 x 80 cm Provenance: Collection of Yann Le Masson, French filmmaker (1930-2012); Then in the family of his wife, Olga Poliakoff (Venga), actress and filmmaker, sister of Marina Vlady. Ilya Mashkov was born in 1881 in the village of Mikhailovskaya-on-Don in a peasant family. Since childhood, Ilya Mashkov liked to draw. He copied cheap popular prints and icons, and once even tried to repeat the portrait of General Mikhail Skobelev from a reproduction. Once Mashkov’s paintings were seen by painter Nikolai Evseev, who began to work with him. Evseev advised him to enter in the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where Mashkov was admitted in the summer of 1900. There taught Leonid Pasternak, Valentin Serov, Konstantin Korovin, Apollinariy Vasnetsov. In 1908, Ilya Mashkov went abroad for the first time. For several years, he was saving up money to travel to European countries - France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Great Britain. In France, Mashkov became fascinated by Fauvism, the work of Henri Matisse, abandoning the complex forms, using bright colors, sharp contours, often distorting perspective. This «innovation in painting» caused him to quarrel with his teacher Valentin Serov. In the 1910s, Ilya Mashkov imitated Paul Cézanne, emphasizing the color of an object, sometimes deliberately depicting it too bright and saturated. In December 1910, together with Pyotr Konchalovsky, Aristarkh Lentulov and Mikhail Larionov, Mashkov organized the exhibition “The Knave of Diamonds” in Moscow. The name for the exhibition was chosen by the participants not by chance, it was a challenge to Moscow rich bourgeoisie, merchants and the nobility: knaves then called crooks, and aces of diamonds - convicts. In 1911, the members of the “The Knave of Diamonds” organized an association of the same name, whose members included Natalia Goncharova, Alexandra Exter, Alexander Kuprin, and the brothers Vladimir and David Burlyuk. By 1912, Mashkov had already presented his canvases at major Russian and foreign exhibitions. On the recommendation of Henri Matisse, Ivan Morozov bought the painting “Blue Plums” for his collection and the Tretyakov gallery bought «Still Life. Camellia» and «Still Life. Pumpkin». In the 1920s-40s, after the First World War and the October Revolution, there was a «turn to juicy reality» in Mashkov’s work. In the 1920s, the painter almost stopped experimenting with colors. Instead of bright colors and bold outlines he began to use muted tones. In 1923, Ilya Mashkov showed his new works in the «Exhibition of paintings» - realistic landscapes and still lifes. A revolutionary and art historian Anatoly Lunacharsky wrote that these paintings show “a turn toward juicy reality, toward pictorial realism”. In the 30s, Ilya Mashkov returned to the traditions of the tonal system of painting.

Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov (Russian 1881 - 1944) Still Life. Oil on Panel. Signed lower left. Sight Size: 13.5 x 17 inches. In 1900, Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov attended the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov but was expelled for his artistic free thinking. During his studies he traveled through Western Europe, Turkey and Egypt. Mashkov was one of the leading members of the artists\' group \'Jack of Diamonds\' (Bubnovyj valet), one of the most significant exhibition societies of the early Russian avant-garde. His works reflected the artistic innovations of Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse, but Mashkov eventually developed his own painting style, drawing on folk art and avant-garde expressionism. In his favorite genre - the still life - the artist managed to achieve a colorful expressiveness, condensing forms, dramatizing color contrasts and exaggerating textures. In addition, Mashkov created powerful nude paintings and drawings that display his talent to represent the human body, as well as landscapes and portraits.
Attributed to Ilya Mashkov, still life with white flowers in pitcher and fruit, signed lower right, 17 1/2" h x 13 3/4" w (view), 23 3/4" h x 20 1/2" w (frame). Provenance: From a California estate.

*MASHKOV, ILYA (1881-1944) Still Life With Vegetables. Oil on board, 42 by 55 cm. Executed in the late 1930s or the early 1940s. Provenance: A gift from Maria Mashkova, the artist's widow, to the prominent Soviet artist Dementy Shmarinov (1909-1999). Thence by descent. Collection of Alexei Shmarinov, son of the above, Moscow. Acquired directly from the above by the present owner. Private collection, Europe. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert Yu. Rybakova. The present lot belongs to the series of still lifes which Ilya Mashkov painted at the village of Abramtsevo, where he lived - hardly leaving the place - from the latter half of the 1930s right up until his death in 1944. Still Life with Vegetables is a kind of quintessence of the creative issues and world view that the artist was resolving during his Abramtsevo period, which makes this work stand out among the other he painted over these years, of which there were around seventy. This picture points particularly to a new understanding by the artist of the essence of its genre as the silent life of things. The avant-garde still lifes of the 1910s and 1920s had been imposing, garish, and intentionally coarse and festive. When Mashkov put behind him, he turned again to real life, to the essential character of objects and nature morte. In Still Life with Vegetables the images are without stridency but nonetheless retain a full-bloodedness and festiveness in the impression they create. He uses highlights of small transparent brushstrokes to reproduce with illusory precision the shine on the sides of the little pumpkin, the cucumber and the jar next to them. At the same time, the radishes, bread and drapery backdrop are painted freely in an agile variety of light, broad strokes. Mashkov painted on plywood, which was highly unusual for a master artist. The lively texture of the plywood seen through the layer of paint reinforces the feeling of "rusticity", raw power and unaffected naturalness about the work. The history of the work is also worthy of note. Some time after Mashkov's death the house he so loved in Abramtsevo was acquired by the family of the legendary Soviet book illustrator Dementy Shmarinov. The Shmarinovs were on close terms with the artist's widow Maria Mashkova-Danilova, who presented Still Life with Vegetables to them as a gift.

The bodies are modeled with skillfully set shading and lighting accents, giving them a wonderful three-dimensional appeal. A masterful drawing with a striking light and shadow effect! The drawing is visually in good condition. There are two restored horizontal tears below the upper margin (right: 9 cm, left: 11 cm) as well as occasional tiny holes, which are also restored. The paper shows faint creasing, the upper corners with smaller traces of previous mounting on the verso. These damages are barely visible. The drawing is matted in a double glazed frame. The work is signed 'Ilya Mashkov' on the recto lower left. The frame shows some abrasions. The framed work measures 82.5 x 59 cm, the sheet measures 57.3 x 33.3 cm. Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov (1881-1944) In 1900 Ilya Ivanovich Mashkov attended the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under Konstantin Korovin and Valentin Serov but was expelled for his artistic free thinking. During his studies he traveled through Western Europe, Turkey and Egypt. Mashkov was one of the leading members of the artists' group 'Jack of Diamonds' (Bubnovyj valet), one of the most significant exhibition societies of the early Russian avant-garde.
