MASARYK Herbert (1. 5. 1880 Vienna - 15. 3. 1915 Prague) Still-life with a green sofa Oil on cardboard, 28 x 45 cm, framed, dated 1906 at the back, signed with initials lower left and at the back. This painting is a remarkable example of the painter's tense, expressive style. The choice of the subject - a simple interior scene - is a means to show his characteristic brushwork based on swift and dramatic strokes. The painter aimed at showing his feeling not the outer visible state. Czech painter, son of the president T.G. Masaryk, he studied under J. V. Myslbek and V. Hynais at the Prague Academy of Arts, his work was stamped with the influence of the fin de siecle and the painter and family friend H. Schwaiger and A. Slavicek. He went on study stays to Italy and Belgium; he was a member of SVU Manes. See T 2/103, NECVU 1/488.
