    SHIOMI MASANARI LINEAGE A Gold-Lacquer Four-Case Inro after a Painting by Hanabusa Itcho (1652-1724) Edo period (1615-1868), 19th century Of rounded rectangular form, the kinji ground embellished in gold and iro-e togidashi maki-e with a scene from the Kyogen play Utsubozaru, depicting on one side a man holding aloft a large utsubo (arrow case) and a sarumawashi (monkey trainer) clutching a line tied to a performing monkey on the other, the interior of matt gold, signed with a typical Shiomi-style red-lacquer seal Shiomi Masanari along the cord runner, and inscribed Hanabusa Itcho with a kao; with a walnut ojime. 7.7cm x 6.3cm (3 1/16in x 2 7/16in).

    SHIOMI MASANARI: A FINE INLAID BLACK LACQUER FOUR-CASE INRO DEPICTING A RABBIT AND SILVER MOON By Shiomi Masanari (1647-1722), signed Shiomi Masanari 鹽見政誠 hitsu 筆 and sealed Masanari 政誠 Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of oval section, bearing a superbly polished, lustrous roiro ground finely decorated in gold and colored hiramaki-e and aogai inlays to depict a rabbit hiding beneath bean pods under a rising full moon delicately rendered in stunning silver togidashi-e to the reverse, the interiors of rich nashiji with gold fundame edges, the reverse signed SHIOMI MASANARI hitsu [painted by Shiomi Masanari] and sealed MASANARI. With a beautifully polished pale green hardstone ojime of globular form. HEIGHT 9.8 cm Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, few small losses to inlays, one minor touchup to lacquer, possibly a few minor touchups to inlays, the ojime with a small chip and hairline fissure. Provenance: Bonhams, 13 September 2011, New York, lot 2097 ( sold for 6,000 USD). A private collection in New York, USA, acquired from the above. Shiomi Masanari (1647-1722) was a talented painter of the Kano school, however he is better known for his lacquerwork and the important family of lacquerers that he founded. The Shiomi family also specialized in togidashi-e ('brought out by rubbing') lacquer of extremely high quality, as is exhibited in the present piece.     SHIOMI MASANARI: A FINE BLACK LACQUER FOUR-CASE INRO DEPICTING A SLEEPING WILD BOAR AND SILVER MOON, WITH A LACQUERED MANJU NETSUKE The inro by Shiomi Masanari (1647-1722), sealed Shiomi Masanari 鹽見政誠; the netsuke by Kensai Tonei, signed Kensai 賢哉 Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Of rounded rectangular form, the superbly polished, lustrous roiro ground with sparse gold hirame, decorated in gold hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with aogai inlays to depict a wild boar sleeping amid autumnal flowers and foliage, its hooves, tusks, snout, and one eye subtly inlaid with mother-of-pearl, its fur well painted, continued on the reverse beneath the full moon in stunning silver togidashi-e. The interior of roiro with gold fundame edges. The reverse signed with two seals SHIOMI and MASANARI. The manju netsuke of circular form, bearing a rogin (shibuichi) ground decorated in gold takamaki-e with a leafy chrysanthemum, the reverse signed KENSAI. The dark lacquered bead ojime of globular form. HEIGHT 7.3 cm (the inro), DIAMETER 3.3 cm (the manju netsuke) Condition: Very good condition with minor wear. One tiny chip to the edge of one cord-runner, one small nibble to edge of one case. The manju netsuke with tiny nicks and few light surface scratches. Provenance: Ex-collection Harriet Szechenyi.     SHIOMI MASANARI: A SUPERB AND LARGE GOLD LACQUER FIVE-CASE INRO OF DAIKOKU RIDING A GIANT RAT By Shiomi Masanari, signed Shiomi Masanari 鹽見政誠 Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The large five-case inro of upright rectangular shape and distinct oval profile, bearing a fine gold kinji ground and masterfully lacquered in iro-e togidashi-e depicting the lucky god of wealth Daikoku mounting a huge rat and pulling at its long tail, the rat seemingly unimpressed, extending to the other side where it calmly sits with its head slightly lowered. The interior compartments of nashiji with gold fundame edges. Signed to the lower left within a red-lacquered rectangular cartouche SHIOMI MASANARI. With a spherical amber ojime. SIZE 9.1 x 5.3 cm Condition: Good condition with minor wear to lacquer, few light surface scratches, tiny chips to edges of cases, some fine age cracks, a few tiny dents to the top of the top case. Some minor old repairs. Presents beautifully. Provenance: Formerly the property of the Strong Museum, donated by Margaret Woodbury Strong (1897-1969), a prolific collector and founder and namesake of the museum. The interior of the bottom case with accession no. '75.1953'. Shiomi Masanari (1647-1722) was a talented painter of the Kano school, however he is better known for his lacquerwork and the important family of lacquerers that he founded. Whether or not he was a pupil of Yamamoto Shunsho (1610-1682) as is widely believed, the Shiomi family also specialized in togidashi-e ('brought out by rubbing') lacquer of extremely high quality, as is exhibited in the present piece. Museum comparison: A near-identical six-case inro, formerly in the collection of William Sturgis Bigelow (1850-1926), is in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, accession no. 11.9892.

    SHIOMI MASANARI: A SUPERB GOLD LACQUER FOUR-CASE INRO OF THE SAMBIKI SARU By Shiomi Masanari, signed Shiomi Masanari 鹽見政誠 Japan, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The four-case inro of upright rectangular shape, bearing a fine gold kinji ground and brilliantly lacquered in togidashi-e with the three wise monkeys (sambiki saru). The interior compartments of nashiji with gold fundame edges. Signed to the lower left within a red-lacquered rectangular cartouche SHIOMI MASANARI. SIZE 7.3 x 5.4 cm Condition: Good overall condition consistent with age and use. Some minor nicks and dents here and there, few light surface scratches, some minor chips to edges, particularly along the cord runners and cases. The interior cases exhibit signs of use and show remnants of powdered medicine. Provenance: From a US private collection in Massachusetts. Shiomi Masanari (1647-1722) was a talented painter of the Kano school, however he is better known for his lacquerwork and the important family of lacquerers that he founded. Whether or not he was a pupil of Yamamoto Shunsho (1610-1682) as is widely believed, the Shiomi family also specialized in togidashi-e ('brought out by rubbing') lacquer of extremely high quality, as is exhibited in the present piece. The sambiki saru are listed as Mizaru, who sees no evil, Kikazaru, who hears no evil and Iwazaru, who speaks no evil. Literature comparison: For a closely related inro depicting the sambiki saru, by Shiomi Masanari, dated to the late 18th century, is illustrated in Davey, Neil K. / Tripp, Susan G. (1993) The Garrett Collection, p. 161, no. 141.

    SHIOMI MASANARI (1647-1722) A lacquer suzuribako (writing box) Edo period (1615-1868), 18th century Rectangular, with flat inrobuta (flush-fitting lid) and curved chiri-i ('dust-rest') edges, decorated in gold togidashi maki-e against a black lacquer ground decorated with two travelers in the rain, the underside of the cover decorated in gold, silver and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and nashiji on a black lacquer ground, with a shoin-zukuri, the sliding doors decorated with floral landscapes in sumi-e togidashi on a rogin-nuri ground, the shelf with a shishi (mythical lion) incense burner, the box fitted with two removable inner trays decorated with a continuation of the design and one decorated with a standing screen with Chinese beauties above the signature Shiomi Masanari in a rectangular reserve in red lacquer, a lobed ink stone, and a circular metal suiteki (water dropper) decorated with cranes and pine trees in low relief 10 7/8 x 8 1/4 x 1 7/8in (27.5 x 20.7 x 5cm) For further information on this lot please visit the Bonhams website
