        MARX HARPO: (1888-1964) American comedian, one of the Marx Brothers. A good vintage signed and inscribed 8 x 10 photograph of Marx seated in a pensive full-length pose on a staircase. Signed in blue ink across a light area at the head of the image with a lengthy inscription, 'Charley, I'm thinking what a wonderfull (sic) job you did for me. Thanks for everything, Sincerely, Harpo', and dated 1949 in his hand. Some light surface creasing and a few extremely minor traces of former mounting to the verso, about VG Provenance: The present photograph was inscribed to Charles Henry, stage director of the London Palladium. Harpo Marx, along with his brother Chico, performed at the London Palladium for a four-week season commencing on 20th June 1949.

        Harpo Marx (American, 1888-1964) Self-Portrait playing the harp, inscribed "Love to Eva / from / Harpo Marx", pen and ink 10 x 9cm; together with a caricature of Harpo Max by COT, an artist on the Los Angeles Examiner, 1939, pen and ink, 17 x 27cm pen and ink (2) Provenance: From the collection of the late Christopher Hogwood, CBE The American comedian, film star, mime artist and musician Harpo Marx was the second-oldest of the Marx Brothers. His comic style was influenced by clown and pantomime traditions; wearing a curly reddish blonde wig, Harpo never spoke during performances - he blew a horn or whistled to communicate - and always managed to play the harp at some stage in all of his films. The caricature of Harpo Marx is by Los Angeles Examiner artist 'COT'. The caption reads "Yep! I play all the band instruments and a monkey - simiantaneous", is dated March 18, 1939 on the reverse, with a pencil note that this drawing would be in Johnson's column on Saturday.
