      Feb. 03, 2018

MARUYAMA OKYO (1735 – 1795): LUCKY GOD EBISU WITH CARP

      Est: €1,100 - €2,200

Ink and pain on silk. Japan, 18th cent. Ebisu, the patron of fishermen and one of the Shichi Fukujin, Japan’s Seven Lucky Gods, seated on a black rock, surrounded by sea waves. In one hand, he holds up a long fishing rod, in the other, a large tai, ocean carp. This image, painted with free, practiced brushstrokes sensitively depicts finely tuned facial features, smiling, as always, and slightly bearded with thick earlobes as are typical for the Lucky Gods. Of them, Ebisu is the only God of purely Japanese heritage and, as the “God of daily nourishment”, he was widely venerated. He was also the titular patron of merchants. In the bottom right-hand corner is the signature Heian 平 安 O-KYO 應 舉 and two red seals reading Okyo and Chusen, another of the artist’s names. Heian, literally “peace”, is a reference to an old name for Kyoto. Partially golden, silk-brocade mounting. Accompanying Japanese certificate from Oshin. Wooden box with an inscription reading “scene with Ebisu ...” and Maruyama Okyo fude. Condition report: Very good original condition. IMAGE 105,5 x 28,8 CM, ROLL 194 x 41,2 CM From a private German collection Condition reports and further images are available upon request - Expertise: Wolfmar Zacken
