Three pencil sketches, signed (unidentified), and inscribed/dated 1940, Carmel by the Sea; depicting Elsie Martinez, Micaela Martinez, and Harriet Dean. Each 12" x 9". 5.-7.) Three drawingsby a young Micaela Martinez, including one signed (monogrammed)still life watercolor; a pencil/watercolor drawing of figures in the ocean; and a pencil sketch of whale(?) bones. 8.) Mark Twain Quarterly, Winter-Spring, 1942; signed/inscribed to Elsie Martinez from Cyril Clemens (a distant cousin of Samuel Clemens). 9.) Notebook with Harriet's miscellaneous notes (in her tight, somewhat challenging hand), which mostly appear to be on literary works (Cervantes, Anatole France, and letters of St. Teresa), 10.)Typed manuscript (copy?) of James Robinson Smith's "The Earliest Lives of Dante," which appears to have proofing/review notes by Harriet. ELSIE WHITAKER was the daughter of author/journalist Herman Whitaker (1867-1919) and grew up among her father's artistic and literary crowd in San Francisco and Oakland. As a child, she attended lectures and meetings at the Ruskin Club with her father and Jack London and was admired among her father's Bohemian set, becoming the subject of paintings, drawings, and photographs. When she was sixteen, she met painter Xavier "Marty" Martinez at the San Francisco Bohemian haunt, Coppa's Restaurant. After the 1906 earthquake, Martinez was among Whitaker's friends who took refuge at his property in the Piedmont hills. He and Elsie married soon after, and their daughter Micaela ("Kai") was born in 1913. HARRIET DEAN was from an Indianapolis, Indiana industrialist family, manufacturers of Dean's Pumps/Dean Brothers' Steam Pump Works. Her parents were Ward Hunt Dean and Nellie Moore Reed. Dean attended Vassar College, but in 1915 (before graduating) she joined Margaret Anderson's Little Review, a modernist literary magazine out of Chicago.Xavier ("Marty") and Elsie Martinez met Harriet Deanin 1916 while Harrietwas working at the Little Reviewin San Francisco. When the magazine's brief stint in the City ended, Harriet stayed. After returning from a year abroadwith Harriet in 1923, Elsie and her daughter,Kai,moved in with her. From this period onward (in Piedmont, then Carmel),Elsie and Harriet cared for and stayed close to Marty, becoming "A two-house family" (see Elsie's oral history, "Artists and Writers of the San Francisco Bay Area, Bancroft Library, 1962-1969:99, 101, etc.). MICAELA"KAI" MARTINEZgrew up amongher parents' artistic Bohemian milieu. Kai began drawing as a child with her father, and as a young girl developed an interest in religious/Catholic themes. As a teenager, she took classes at the California School of Arts and Crafts (CCAC/CCA) in Oakland, and with sculptor Ralph Stackpole at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. She also studied with muralist Victor Arnautauff, and later stonework with Ruth Cravath. Following her studies, she painted the library murals for the Franciscans in San Francisco, painted fresco murals for the seminarian's library at the San Luis Rey Mission, created Stations of the Cross paintings and sculptures for the cloisters of the Franciscan Sisters, and altar/mural at the U.S. Naval Auxiliary Air Station in Monterey. She was also a stagecraft artist/set painter, and later taught liturgical art classes at the San Francisco College for Women at Lone Mountain, and lectured at Holy Names University in Oakland. In 1944 she married painter Ralph DuCasse (1940-2003), and had two daughters. They eventually divorced, and Kai remained at the family's Piedmont house, where she maintained her studio to the end of her life. Xavier Martinez: Letters to His Daughter, 1932-1942.

        Est: $800 - $1,200

MARTINEZ, XAVIER. 1869-1943. A group of well over 200 autographed letters signed and written to Martinez's daughter, Micaela"Kai" Martinez DuCasse, 1932-1942. A number of letters include drawings. Condition is overall very good; the letters are crisp and readable. Almost all lack envelopes, and those that are present (holding bunches of letters together), have tears and stamps removed. There are twelve packets, each containing approx. 10 to 50 letters. Note: letters have only been spot-read, so there is much content to discover. Many are on Martinez's personal letterhead, with his red monogram. The earlier letters are newsy and more voluminous, expressing interest and support for his daughter's work and career, thoughts on art, his colleagues and classes at the California College of Arts and Crafts, memories, and anecdotes about friends and socializing. The later letters, towards the end of his life, are briefer, reporting on his health and resulting struggles with teaching, expressing melancholy, worry, and loneliness. He often writes of "Olympia", who it seems helped him around the house in Piedmont (there are several letters from Olympia, updating Kaion her father, her own artwork, and sharing general news). PACKETS: 1932 to 1935: Over 50 letters, several of which are illustrated, including drawings of Sappho the Cat, and a landscape. He writes of art, acting, and music, Greco and Rembrandt; discussion of the Lindbergh little boy, and that he believes he's dead; that the Bohemian Club is building a new clubhouse, and Fred paid his fair and "a good lunch at Coppa's", where he saw "very few of my old friends and there was Bertha". He writes of going to the Legion of Honor and seeing Ramos Martinez paintings, and his own painting in Golden Gate Park. June 1936: Approx. 20 letters. There is a postcard with a small silverpoint pencil artwork, and topics include Spooky the dog; mention of Roman Hubbell (son of John HubbellHubbell's Trading Post, AZ), and how he and his father were "the only pale faces the Navajo befriended". Also, letters from Olympia. July 1936: Approx. 11 letters. Includes a letter with a wonderful cartoon of Martinez and Olympia; a drawing of a neighbor's house; a story about the "girl who danced for Lester (Horton); a scene Naya (Virginia Hale painted); his "cloud drawings" and the San Francisco Museum. May 1937: Approx. 11 letters. Includes two letters from Olympia, including an amusing and newsy letter updating on Marty's health; she bumped into Mrs. Roberts at Capwell's lunch counter, who says she wants to drive Marty and her up to Porter Garnett's place, but Olympia is afraid Marty is going to back out. June 1937: Approx. 15 letters. Topics include his worry for Kai as she travels; mention of artist Kisa (Beck); an invite for an "old guard dinner" at Bohemian Grove that he feels he can't attend; discussion of bookbinding, and remembering his father (who was a bookbinder in Mexico); word of his sick sister; and news of Mexico from Armando (Valdes Peza). April 1940: Approx. 28 letters. Topics include: sending money for Roos Bros. bill; Louis Miljarak and Vatinia Sulprizio giving him rides home from the school; Olympia not showing up; his ill health asthma; Kai's visit with Ralph Pearson. November 1940: Approx. 22 letters. Topics include news of the Lattimores; Kisa Beck; his friend Louis Dean's death; his foster mother's(Rosalia de Coney) uncle, an Arch Bishop of Mexico; discussion of Gogol stories he wants Kai to read; June (Hass?) asking for Walter Pach's address. March 1941:Approx. 16 letters. Topics include: his old friend Albert Bender, from 1895, has died; Marion visits (possibly George Sterling's younger sister); students; Kai's theater work; June and Sidney take him to a Mexican dinner; he sends $2 for Pal's (Harriet Dean) birthday; a lonely Easter. April 1942: Approx. 18 letters. Among the subjects, he writes that he is going to meet an old student, Joe Raphael, "who with Piazzoni was one of my closest friends in the old art school". January 1942: Approx. 16 letters. Talk of war, blackouts, and Kai joining the Red Cross; he is worried that she is in Carmel by the sea, not safer in Piedmont. July 1942: Approx. 9 letters. He writes of his health, arthritis, difficulty getting to his next session of classes, and a planned trip to Carmel. From the Family of Xavier Martinez (1869-1943), Elsie Whitaker Martinez (1890-1984), and Micaela Martinez DuCasse (1913-1989).

The grouping was saved together and includes family letters, photographs, and assorted personal ephemera. Many of the photos and several letters are from his aristocratic foster mother, champion of his artistic education and career,Rosalia LaBastida de Coney (1844-1897), and several official documents/letters relate toher husband, Alexander K. Coney (1847-1930), Consul-General of Mexico. INCLUDES: -- Aformal photograph of Martinez, signed/inscribed anddated 1905. -- 5 photosof an unidentified funeral; 7 photos of RosaliaLaBastida de Coney (various sizes), and 10+ cabinet cards and card de visites of unidentified family. -- 2 small signed artworks/cards, by Martinez, including a silverpoint. --Approx. x 19th/early 20th century photographs (many of his stepmother, Rosaliade Coney). -- Approx. 15 family letters from Mexico, in Spanish (1894; 1897; 1906-1907; 1926; 1936). They are from his father, brother, sister, and nephew. The 1906-1907 letters express worry following the San Francisco earthquake. --Approx. 7 lettersfrom Rosalia De Coney, in Spanish, most illustrated with her drawings(1893-1896). -- One letter from his fosterfather, Consul General Alexander K. de Coney, on mourning paper(both 1897); and 10letters sent to the Consul General, most appearing to be of an official nature (in Spanish). -- A collection of approx. 34 photo postcards (unsent) of mostly musicians and actresses, late 19th/early 20th century. -- 2 photos of the interior of the Piedmont studio. -- Approx. 17 postcards sent to Martinez from Elsie, Micaela, and others, 1910s-1940s. -- An assortment of misc. personal items, such as canceled checks, a payment contract for a Sherman Clay piano (paid off by Martinez and others); a leather wallet with Martinez inscribed name/address, a copper plate for a visiting card, deed/receipts for housein Carmel (from friend/artist Virginia S. Hale), two programs signed by Enrique Munguia (1933), and other misc. The family letters express affection and closeness from his far-away family. His brother writes on May 17, 1906 (soon after the earthquake): "My very dear brother, Your letter came to calm me down completely. Since I knew of the catastrophe I didn't have a moment of tranquility. I saw you in the rubble or taken by fire or dying of hunger and thirst". His father writes to him in 1907: "My dear son, Since the catastrophe that happened in that country, and [after] Julia [Xavier's sister] wrote to you I haven't had any news from you". His father also writes of his bookstore and bookbinding tools, and requests money from his son. His sister, addressing him as "my dear and unforgettable brother", writes of general family/local news and gossip. The letters from Martinez's foster mother, Rosalia de Coney, are interesting in that they show a close and affectionate relationship, and also Rosalia's own artistic spirit. It was Rosalia who brought him to San Francisco, and she arranged for and advocated for him in his early art education, including encouraging his studies in Europe. She addresses him as "My dear son", frets about his health, tells him that she loves him and is proud of him, and that his father is sending him tobacco and paints. She also seems to discuss his friends and associates, sends a hug to his "woman friend", and giving social advice, discussesa female friend and "tact",and tellshim that she wisheshe would "separate from his friend". She writes of the death and memories of her father (possibly the funeral photos are for her father).
