SERGIO MARTÍNEZ CIFUENTES (Santiago de Chile, 1966). "Contraluz en el mar 1", 2005. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower left corner. Dated and titled on the back. Measurements: 130 x 73 cm. A Chilean artist based in Madrid, Sergio Martinez stood out for his drawings when he was still a child, and in his adolescence he began to participate in numerous youth painting competitions, obtaining important recognitions. He then began his training, which was completely self-taught. In these early years he developed a language framed within the descriptive realism, focused on the landscape and marked by a great mastery over the forms and a contained and elegant handling of color. In 1987 he marries, and takes his wife as a model for his first retros and nudes, encountering for the first time a new challenge, that of the human figure. His work will increasingly focus on this new theme, and from the nineties the nude will be the absolute protagonist of his language. The painter will continue to evolve, and between 2000-2002 his academicism, heir of the Pre-Raphaelites, is broken to give way to an increasingly personal language. Oil painting is left behind in favor of acrylic, he replaces his fine canvases with others of greater texture, and changes his interest in detail for a special attention to light and form. Later he will return again to oil, to the refined brushstroke, dragging, however, his experience with acrylic, resulting in new compositions and effects of volume and light. At the same time, between 1993 and 2002 he dedicated himself to teaching in his private painting studio in the Chilean city of Concepción, and in 2002 he began his international career, participating in international fairs in Caracas, Buenos Aires, Madrid, California, New York, San Francisco and Shanghai. From that same year he will be represented in the United States and Canada by Global Fine Art, and a year later, in 2003, he settles in Madrid. Between 2004 and 2010 he is represented in Spain and other countries in Europe, Africa and Asia by the Sammer Gallery. His work is currently on permanent exhibition at the Max Black Gallery in Indiana (USA), Pelley's in London, the Vazquez Kunst in Blaricum (Holland), the Sammer in Puerto Banus (Malaga) and El Cuadro Gallery in Dubai. As for his exhibitions, in 1987 he made his debut at the Sala de Extensión Cultural de la Municipalidad de Talcahuano (Chile), and in 1992 he made the international leap, holding exhibitions in Germany and Norway. Since that year he has shown his work both in Chile and abroad, in countries such as Argentina, Venezuela, the United States, Spain, China and Taiwan, also participating in important fairs such as Art Expo in New York.
