      Mar. 23, 2023

"Abstract Composition", Antoni Clavé, mixed technique on canvas

      Est: €6,000 - €7,000

Framed measures: 60 x 46, canvas measures: 33.5 x 20 cm. Measures Barcelona, Spain, 1913 – Saint-Tropez, France, 2005. Having trained in the Llotja de Barcelona with Fèlix Mestres, Josep Mongrell and Ángel Ferrant, at the end of the Civil War he went into exile in France, where he lived until his death, first in Perpignan, then in Paris and Saint Tropez; from there he gained wide international recognition. Painter, engraver and sculptor, he was associated with the so-called School of Paris, along with Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Joan Miró and Antonio Saura. Although initially his work was more graphic and also scenographic, from the beginning of the fifties he devoted himself to painting. He went through an intimate realism, through expressionism and symbolism, until he settled on informalism and experimental abstraction. The most characteristic of his production since 1975 were the backgrounds that simulate folded and superimposed papers, represented in trompe l'oeil, and what he called papier froissé, which incorporated the spray on crumpled paper. He was one of the contemporary Catalan artists with the greatest international presence, with exhibitions and awards, such as the UNESCO prize at the Venice Biennale in 1956. Among his retrospectives, those presented at the Musée national d'art moderne in Paris (1978) stand out. ), the Spanish Pavilion at the Venice Biennale (1984) and the Can Framis space of the Fundació Vila Casas (2013).

HORACIO LENGO MARTÍNEZ (Torremolinos, Málaga, 1840 - Madrid, 1890). "Still life with fish and Nasrid tiles". Oil on panel. Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 61 x 49,5 cm; 74 x 63 cm (frame). Horacio Lengo was an outstanding author of nineteenth-century Malaga painting. He was able to respond to the eclectic and decorative taste of the national scene, with a painting of a precious and laborious style. In his eagerness to broaden the knowledge he had acquired in Cadiz with Martínez del Rincón, Lengo returned to Malaga and became part of the Malaga cultural scene, taking part in two exhibitions: the National Fine Arts Exhibition of 1871 and the Malaga Lyceum Exhibition of 1872. But he felt that he needed to advance his knowledge of painting. To this end, and following the custom of many Spanish painters, Lengo sought the teaching he needed outside Spain, finding it in Paris and in the studio of the painter Léon Bonnat. After his apprenticeship and once back in Malaga, he resumed both his personal and artistic life, taking part in the exhibition organised by the Town Hall on the occasion of King Alfonso XII's visit to the city. Finally he moved to Madrid with his family, where he devoted himself to painting, exhibiting and, above all, selling his paintings to the nobility and the upper middle-class collectors.

Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 58 x 48 cm; 82 x 72,5 cm (frame). This type of compositions whose protagonists are the doves, inscribed within a still life, were very common in the painting of Horacio Lengo, an example of this is his work "Romeo and Juliet", made in 1881. In this particular case the author surrounds the scene with a dark background, with a black tone that highlights the white plumage of the birds and the porcelain of the Vase. It is interesting to mention this ceramic, as it is very reminiscent of the vases of the Alhambra, which were very popular at the time, being Fortuny the owner of one of the vases. Horacio Lengo was born into a wealthy family, being educated by his grandfather, consul of Trieste and Tuscany. From a very young age, he became fond of drawing, participating in an exhibition at the Lyceum in 1845. Some time later he began his career as a civil servant in the Treasury, being assigned to Cadiz in 1855. There he married a rich heiress of an illustrious surname in the city, and it was during these years when he came into contact with the artistic world through his teacher and great friend Serafín Martínez del Rincón, a painter from Palencia who was transferred to the School of Fine Arts in Cádiz. Lengo returned to his native Malaga in 1871, and participated in several national exhibitions. The following year he will be appointed secretary of the Liceo in its Fine Arts section, and in 1874. In the French capital he will attend Léon Bonnard's workshop as a disciple, and will take part in a group exhibition in 1975. From Paris Lengo returns with a different conception of painting, and from 1877 his painting will begin to be recognized in Malaga, thanks to the success of his participation in various competitions and exhibitions. In 1882 he settled permanently in Madrid. In 1890 he achieved great recognition with a portrait of his daughter, this being his last public exhibition since that same year, suffering from a fatal illness, he committed suicide in his Madrid studio. In addition to portraiture and caricature, Lengo cultivated the composition of small still lifes and decorative artistic caprices with poetic and literary titles, often starring elegant birds. Within this group is the canvas presented here, as well as those preserved in the Museo del Prado "Leonora" and "Manrique", inspired by the characters of the opera "The Troubadour" by Antonio García Gutiérrez, premiered at the Teatro Príncipe in 1836. Horacio Lengo is currently represented in the Prado Museum, the Provincial Council and the Municipal Heritage Museum of Malaga and in the Goya Secondary School of Zaragoza, as well as in various private collections.
