Martinez” Overall dimensions, framed: 84 x 64 cm This fine oil painting stems from the circle of Enrique Martinez Cubells y Ruiz (1874-19747). It shows a water pond in a rocky hollow into which several, small waterfalls cascade. Pond and rocks are surrounded by a dense forest landscape. Especially well-rendered is the contrast between the depiction of clearly articulated structures and more soft, less defined areas. The oil painting “Las Cascadas” as well as its frame show traces of age and wear, such as partly restored craquelure, an indentation along the edges due to the stretcher frame and some punctures of the canvas of which one at the centre has been reinforced at the back and restored at the front. The overall dimensions are framed 84 x 64 cm, unframed 76 x 48 cm. The painting is inscribed lower right with “E. Martinez”. Enrique Martinez Cubells y Ruiz (1874-19747) Enrique Martinez Cubells y Ruiz studied first under his father before he went to the school of art in Madrid. During a journey through Europe in 1898, he was influenced by Modernism and especially by contemporary German art. From 1897 he took part in numerous national and international exhibitions and his work is awarded with several prizes and medallions. The Prado owns seven of his paintings.
