Alfredo Ramos Martinez (1871-1946) Mex, Serigraph

            Est: $200 - $400

Alfredo Ramos Martinez (1871-1946) Mexican, Serigraph. Titled "La India de las Floripondias." Signed in plate (twice) top left and right. As Is condition. Depicts a young woman beneath trees holding a flower. Overall size: 32 1/2 X 26 1/2 in. Sight size: 29 1/2 X 23 1/2 in. #1491 . Alfredo Martinez was born in Monterrey, Mexico in 1871. He studied at the Academia Nacional de Belles Artes in Mexico City between 1884 and 1892. As a young artist Martinez caught the attention of American suffragette and philanthropist Phoebe Hearst, who arranged financial support for him to study abroad. Martinez studied, lived and worked in Paris, France, and was eventually able to support himself after he received an award for one of his paintings at the Salon d’Automme in 1906. In 1910 he accepted the position of Director of the School of Fine Arts in Mexico City. In 1928 he married, and he and his wife had a daughter. Her health was fragile, so the Martinez family relocated to Los Angeles, California to seek superior medical care for her. He worked on commissioned murals while living there, becoming recognized for his Mexican genre scenes painted in rich browns and ochres. His work established him as part of the Mexican School, although he did not profess the political messages of his Mexican contemporaries such as Diego Rivera and Jose Orozco. His artwork was included in solo and group exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the San Diego Art Gallery, and the Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. His murals and frescoes can still be found in many Los Angeles hotels, private homes and chapels. The last project with which he was involved was a panel mural at the Margaret Fowler Memorial Garden at Scripps College in Claremont, California. Only two of the nine panels were completed before Martinez died in Los Angeles in 1946. Location BC
