Follower of John Ferneley, Senior (British, 1782-1860) - Captain Richard Martin of Brampton on his bay hunter out hunting

          Est: £400 - £600

Follower of John Ferneley, Senior (British, 1782-1860) Captain Richard Martin of Brampton on his bay hunter out hunting sold together with Captain Martin's hunting whip oil on canvas (2) h:62 w:74 cm Provenance: Richard Martin, Brampton Lodge, Huntingdon, and by descent; A gift in 1896 to Socrates Lodge, Huntingdon and by descent. Sold with the hunting whip carried by Captain Martin inscribed, "Richard Martin, Brampton Lodge, from DA", oil on canvas. Captain Richard Martin, third son of Mr Henry Martin of Brampton Lodge, county of Huntingdon, died in the East Indies in his 32nd year. By repute, Captain Martin is riding a winner of the Cesarewitch Handicap. The winners are seldom if ever bred from, so instead the horse became a hunter, and presumably had been given to Captain Martin, who may have been a part owner. Captain Martin's dress and bearing indicate that he is probably an ex-cavalry officer. The Cesarewitch Handicap is a flat handicap horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Newmarket over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs (3,621 metres) and finishes on the Rowley Mile. It is scheduled to take place each year in October.
