20th C. Pacific Northwest Wood Rattle, Mungo Martin

        Est: $900 - $1,350

North America, Pacific Northwest (USA and Canada), Native American, Mungo Martin (1879-1962, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada), ca. 1948 CE. A beautiful wooden shamanic rattle, hand-carved by famed totem pole carver Mungo Martin. The front face of the rattle resembles a classic Pacific Northwest beaver, defined by its large hexagonal eyes, spiralized nostrils, arching cheeks and eye brows, perky rectangular ears, and gaping mouth full of square teeth with the two in front being the most prominent. The mammalian visage boasts painted details in hues of emerald, fuchsia, and jet, all nicely complemented against the natural beige wood grain. The face, handle, and pommel are all contiguous, with only a back panel being separated to insert and remove the small rattle balls within. When shook, this amusing instrument emits a deep and meditative sound. A wonderful example of old-world craftsmanship made by one of Canada's most revered artisans! Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 6.75" W x 13" H (17.1 cm x 33 cm); 15" H (38.1 cm) on included custom stand.
