Homer Dodge Martin New York, Minnesota, (1836-1897) Hudson River Valley Landscape oil on canvas Martin was a self-taught artist enamoured with the spirit of nature of his home state, New York. He worked predominantly as a landscape painter—whether he focused more on the Romantic elements of the genre as part of the Hudson School (in his earlier years) or on its more realistic elements as part of the Barbizon School or as an impressionist painter of it (later in life, and after an influential trip to France). He enjoyed making sketches of numerous vistas and valleys across upstate New York before painting them from memory from within his studio located in the iconic Tenth Street Studio Building that served as the center of NYC art production in the 19th c. Here we have a dreamy landscape capturing the subtle natural daylight and verdant beauty of the Hudson River Valley, including a lone man rowing a boat along the river's left bank. The absolute peace and serenity of the American land that has been captured here by Martin reflect nothing of the tumultuous events and aftermath of the Civil War that marked the times. His work is cherished by collectors across the country and has become part of the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, the MET, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Addison Gallery of Art, et. al. Homer Dodge Martin (1836 - 1897) Oil on board, Signed Lower Left, Measures ( 6 x 9 inches) w/frame ( 8.5 x 11.5 inches) Born in Albany, New York, the same year as Alexander Wyant, on 28 October 1836, Martin forged a career that spanned the Hudson River School style to more of a plein-air style that approximated impressionism. Popular with the earlier critics, Martin was praised with hyperbole: "his finest canvases looked as if no one but God and he had ever seen the places pictured" (Sherman, 1917, p. 4) but was justly allocated a respectful place in the pantheon of American landscape painters. Martin was the son of Homer Martin and Sarah Dodge. Martin's future wife Elizabeth verified that he made drawings as a child (Martin, 1904, pp. 4-5) and a lot of what he learned was self-taught. Erastus Dow Palmer, the sculptor, recognized Martin's talent and invited him to attend a salon of artists that included George Boughton (1833-1905), William Hart (1823-1894) and James M. Hart (1828-1901).

Martin was born in Albany, New York. During the 1860s he spent the summers in the Adirondacks, Catskills, and White Mountains, and painted landscapes from the sketches he made there at his studio in New York City’s Tenth Street Studio Building. Martin was elected as associate of the National Academy of Design, New York, in 1868, and a full academician in 1974. During a trip to Europe in 1876, He was captivated by the Barbizon School and the impressionists, and thereafter his painting style gradually became darker, moodier, and more loosely brushed.

Homer Dodge Martin (1836 - 1897) Forest Interior Oil on Board. Signed on lower right. Homer Dodge Martin was one of the first artists to introduce Impressionism into American painting. He is known for his melancholy, poetic landscapes, with subtle color and treatment of light. Martin was part of a generation or group of artists whose works were transitional between the Hudson River School and the Barbizon group as it was called in France. Although he was primarily a self-taught artist, he did study briefly with landscapist James Hart. During his early years as a painter, he faced many hurdles, including his lack of professional training and his physical ailments such as melancholy, chronic eczema, and failing vision that rendered him nearly blind towards the end of his life. He became a member of the National Academy of Design in 1874, and in 1877 was one of the founders of the Society of American Artists.
