CONTACT US SKU#: 129212 US Shipping $120 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: Jacques Martin-Ferrieres, born in St. Paul (Tarn), was the son of the great Post-Impressionist artist Henri Martin (1860-1943). In addition to studying with and being profoundly influenced by his father, Martin-Ferrieres studied with Frederic Cormon (1854-1924) and Ernest Laurent (1859-1929). He exhibited regularly at the annual Salon des Artistes Francais in Paris, where he became an hors-concours member. He won medals at the Salon in 1920 and 1923, and received a travel scholarship in 1924. In addition, Martin-Ferrieres was awarded the prestigious Prix National in 1925 for Le Peintre, which was later exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. His important work, Marche d'Assisi, won him both the Gold Medal at the Paris Salon in 1928 and the Institut Francais' Prix Legay-Lebrun - it was acquired by the City of Paris. In 1937, Martin-Ferrieres received a Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle. During World War II, Martin-Ferrieres joined the Resistance in the Dordogne, was captured and sentenced to be executed. His life was spared and, by 1950, he was painting and traveling again, most frequently to his beloved Venice. In 1856, the artist was made an Officer of the Legion d'Honneur. Major retrospective exhibitions of the artist's work were held in Paris in 1939 and 1965.

In this floral still life it is clear both the impressionist and pointillist legacy that channelled Jacques Martin-Ferrières's painting and the conceptual renovation that he gave to that tradition. When contemplating this vase, Van Gogh and his vase of sunflowers come to mind, but also Seurat's neo-Impressionism. With complete freedom, Martin-Ferrières draws from different sources, resulting in a style of his own characterised by the spiritual repose conveyed by his atmospheres, managing to extract a silent order underlying the chromatic symphony and the implosion of almost fractal forms. In recent decades, the work of this artist has undergone a remarkable revaluation, as is attested to by numerous retrospective exhibitions held in French galleries. Thus, the Maket gallery in Paris devoted a solo exhibition to him, "Voyages", in 2014; and the following year, the Alexis Galerie Alexis Pentcheff gallery in Marseille brought together 150 works for a retrospective. Jacques Martin-Ferrières, born in St. Paul (Tarn), was the son of fellow Post-Impressionist painter Henri Martin. In addition to studying with and being influenced by his father, Martin-Ferrières studied with Fréderic Cormon and Ernest Laurent. JACQUES MARTIN-FERRIÈRES (France, 1893-1972). "Vase of flowers". Oil on canvas. Signed and dated in the lower right corner. Measurements: 65 x 86 cm; 86 x 97 cm (frame). In this floral still life it is clear both the impressionist and pointillist legacy that channelled Jacques Martin-Ferrières's painting and the conceptual renovation that he gave to that tradition. When contemplating this vase, Van Gogh and his vase of sunflowers come to mind, but also Seurat's neo-Impressionism. With complete freedom, Martin-Ferrières draws from different sources, resulting in a style of his own characterised by the spiritual repose conveyed by his atmospheres, managing to extract a silent order underlying the chromatic symphony and the implosion of almost fractal forms. In recent decades, the work of this artist has undergone a remarkable revaluation, as is attested to by numerous retrospective exhibitions held in French galleries. Thus, the Maket gallery in Paris devoted a solo exhibition to him, "Voyages", in 2014; and the following year, the Alexis Galerie Alexis Pentcheff gallery in Marseille brought together 150 works for a retrospective. Jacques Martin-Ferrières, born in St. Paul (Tarn), was the son of fellow Post-Impressionist painter Henri Martin. In addition to studying with and being influenced by his father, Martin-Ferrières studied with Fréderic Cormon and Ernest Laurent. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he became a member of the competitions. He won medals at the Salon in 1920 and 1923, and received a travel grant in 1924. Martin-Ferrières was also awarded the prestigious Prix National in 1925 for Le Peintre. He subsequently exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. His important work, "Marche d'Assisi", won him the Gold Medal at the 1928 Paris Salon and the Legay-Lebrun Prize of the French Institute, and was acquired by the City of Paris. In 1937, Martin-Ferrières was awarded the Gold Medal of the Universal Exhibition. During the Second World War, Martin-Ferrières joined the Resistance in the Dordogne, was captured and condemned. He was finally pardoned and in 1950 he returned to painting and travelling, especially to his beloved Venice. In 1856, the artist was made an Officer of the Legion of Honour. Important anthological exhibitions were held in Paris in 1939 and 1965. Museums and public collections where his work is kept: Boca Raton Museum of Art, Boca Raton, Florida; Indianapolis Museum of Art, Indianapolis, L'Église Saint-Christophe de Javel, Paris; Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris (Petit Palais), Paris; Musée Malraux, Le Havre.
