NÉSTOR Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 1887-1938 Romantic garden and sculpture. 1918-22 Watercolor on paper Signed Measurements 18 x 18 cm Authenticity confirmed by D. Daniel Montesdeoca We are faced with an unpublished sketch for stained glass, signed by Néstor Martín - Fernández de la Torre around 1918-1922. Its tondo shape, like the accentuated contours of the drawing, refers us to one of the few examples that have survived to this day of these decorative designs for public or private spaces. It is known that Néstor conceived several projects for the famous Maumejean House, of which the template for a pantheon (1925) is a good prototype, which is preserved in its museum. Daniel Montesdeoca (Director of the Néstor LPG Museum)

Attributed to NÉSTOR MARTÍN- FERNÁNDEZ LA TORRE (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1887 - 1938). Untitled. Pencil on paper. It has tears and folds in the paper. Presents inscription. Measurements: 24 x 20 cm; 46 x 41 cm (frame). The characteristics of this work bring us closer to the work of Néstor Martín Fernández who was a painter framed within the European symbolism and modernism, author of a work unanimously considered as key to understand these artistic movements. He began to draw as a child, and in 1899 his first teacher was the Catalan landscape painter Eliseo Meifrén, by whose hand he painted his first picture. When he was fifteen he moved to Madrid, where he became a disciple of Rafael Hidalgo de Caviedes. In 1904 he began a trip through Europe that would take him to Paris, Brussels, Ghent, Bruges and London. However, it was his years in Paris that ended up shaping his personal language, giving it a great decorative scope, since he carried out several projects of ornamentation of public buildings and scenery and figurine design. On his return to Spain he held his first exhibition in 1908, at the Círculo Ecuestre in Barcelona, and the following year he exhibited at the prestigious Sala Parés in the same city. A few years later he exhibited in another of the key halls of modernism, the Faianç Català (1911). He then returned to London and there he executed a series of etchings that won him first prize at the London Municipal School. In the following years he continued to show his work in exhibitions in Paris and Madrid.

NÉSTOR Las Palmas de Gran Canaria 1887-1938 Satyr from the Hespérides Valley. c. 1913 Pastel and charcoal on paper Measurements 53 x 35 cm PROVENANCE Rafael López Egoñez Benjamín Palencia Herederos Benjamín Palencia Private collection < br> Due to its origin, Néstor's piece may be a sketch of the one he exhibited in Sala Parés (Barcelona, 1913), and in Casa Lissárraga (Madrid, 1914), which was later reproduced in the Illustrated Magazine , La Esfera (Year II. No. 57. Madrid, 1915. Ed. Prensa Gráfica, SA), appearing on the cover with the title: Satyr of the Valley of Hespérides, drawing by Néstor. Possibly this piece passed into the hands of Palencia thanks to the testamentary legacy of the engineer of roads, ports and canals, Rafael López Egoñez (1883-1951), who was his tutor and patron since he was fifteen years old. Familiarly he called him uncle, although there was never a relationship of kinship. We do not rule out that Néstor had a friendship with the aforementioned Rafael López Egoñez through Benjamin, whom he met at the Student Residence in 1923. Daniel Montesdeoca (Néstor Museum Director. NÉSTOR MARTÍN- FERNÁNDEZ LA TORRE (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1887 - 1938). "Indoor scene". Oil on canvas. Attached certificate issued by Daniel Montes de Oca, director of the Néstor Museum (Gran Canaria). Signed in the lower right corner. Measurements: 57 x 80 cm; 80.5 x 102.5 cm (frame). This work belongs to the artist's first period, when he moved to Catalonia, a period that lasted from 1906 to 1910. It is worth mentioning, although the theme used is not usual in the production of Néstor Martin Fernández de la Torre, the particular costumbrist treatment of the interior of this rural house. It seems to have more of a scenography than a studied composition and can be related to works such as "Taller de Artista" from 1903-1904 or "Interior", 1903-1904. Known simply as Nestor, he was a painter framed within European symbolism and modernism, author of an oeuvre unanimously considered key to understanding these artistic movements. A few years later he exhibited in another of the key halls of modernism, the Faianç Català (1911). He then returned to London and there he executed a series of etchings that won him first prize at the London Municipal School. In the following years he continued to show his work in exhibitions in Paris and Madrid. Before the end of the decade he carried out his first major scenographic project, the creation of sets and costumes for Manuel de Falla's "El amor brujo", premiered in Madrid in 1915. In 1928 he moved his studio to Paris, from where he sent his paintings to various exhibitions both in Europe and America, the first of them in Buenos Aires in 1918, even before settling in the French capital. In 1924 he presented the first part of his vital work, the series "Poema del Atlántico", at the Palacio de la Biblioteca and the Museo Municipal de Madrid. That same year he also exhibited in Venice. After a trip to Africa, Nestor finally returned to the Canary Islands in the 1930s, where he spent the last part of his life. His work is currently kept in the Nestor Museum in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, among other collections.
