Benito Quinquela was one of the protagonists of the Argentinean plastic renovation from the decade of 1920. His painting fructified in a golden age in the country, turning him into one of the most prestigious artists at international level. Born in the port district of La Boca, to which he would always remain linked, the subject matter of his work revolved around ships, workers and the work of the port, thus denouncing their strenuous and precarious working conditions. With an impeccable technique based on the juxtaposition of shapes and colors, Quinquela's compositions captured the beauty of everyday life and the day-to-day life of the Argentine people, through a completely identifiable style with its own message. Of humble origins, from a very young age Benito Quinquela was dedicated to the sale of charcoal, a material that, due to its characteristics, allowed him to use it as a painting element to develop his artistic capacity on paper. Trained at the Pezzini Sttiatessi Conservatory, in the Union of La Boca, he quickly knew the rise in his pictorial career, being recognized for his first exhibition in 1910. In 1914 he exhibited at the First National Salon, and in 1918 he exhibited at the Witcomb Gallery. In 1919 he showed his work for the first time at the Jockey Club. Around 1922, he shared work and moments with Miguel Carlos Victorica and Fortunato Lacámera. A year later, he had his first exhibition in Europe, at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. In 1925 he arrived in Paris, two years later in New York and in 1929 in Italy, where Mussolini named him his favorite painter "because he knows how to portray work". In 1938, already established as a recognized artist, he acted as a protector of the arts and founded the Café Tortoni so that artists could disseminate their work. In 1933 he bought several plots of land which he donated to the State to build institutions dedicated to the diffusion of art and social works. In one of those lands he built the Escuela Museo Pedro de Mendoza (today Museo de Bellas Artes de La Boca), which was decorated by the artist himself. In 1944 he began his long dedication to the Argentine proletariat, inaugurating the Escuela de Artes Gráficas para Obreros (School of Graphic Arts for Workers). During the following years, he continued to exhibit in places such as the Witcomb Gallery in Buenos Aires, the Emilio Caraffa Provincial Museum of Fine Arts in Cordoba, the Association of People of Arts and Letters of La Boca. In 1966, he inaugurated the Terraces of the Museum of Fine Arts of La Boca, to give the space to exhibitions of sculptures by various artists and, in the same year, he gave the "Order of the Screw" to Charles Chaplin, receiving it on his behalf his daughter Geraldine. Considered one of the most outstanding painters in Argentina, along with figures of the stature of Xul Solar, Emilio Pettoruti, Lino Eneas Spilimbergo or Antonio Berni, his paintings are among the most staked galleries worldwide: the Luxembourg Museum or the Saint James Palace in London, among others.

Benito Quinquela es para Argentina un filántropo modelo y pintor ejemplar, uno de los más reconocidos artistas cuya obra se cotiza en el mercado internacional. Sus inicios como artista fueron complicados, desde joven tuvo que dejar la escuela para trabajar en una carbonería y como peón de descarga en el puerto de La Boca debido a la situación económica familiar; no obstante, siempre encontraba un momento para dibujar, siendo entonces los barcos y sus trabajadores, las casas humildes, las calles, los galpones y los aserraderos de La Boca parte importante de su lenguaje pictórico. Estudió en el Conservatorio Pezzini-Stiatessi, donde aprendió el impresionismo a la italiana de los Macchiaioli. Poco a poco su trabajo fue avanzando, hasta que en 1916, la revista Fray Mocho le dedicó una nota que hablaba exclusivamente sobre él, y posteriormente fue publicado en otros diarios con respuestas positivas. Más tarde, fue Eduardo Taladrid, secretario de la Academia, quien se convirtió en su amigo y mecenas, realizando con su ayuda una exposición en la galería más prestigiosa del momento: Witcomb. Ese mismo año obtuvo el 3° premio en el Salón Nacional. Posteriormente comenzó a hacer varios viajes al extranjero, conociendo Río de Janeiro, Nueva York, Madrid y París, aprendiendo y entablando grandes amistades. Sin embargo, siempre enamorado de su tierra, Quinquela decidió regresar a su país y ya con prestigio internacional, decidió retribuir al estado y donó un terreno para construir una escuela primaria, un espacio para vivienda y un taller personal. En 1935, abrió en el barrio de La Boca el Museo de Artistas Argentinos, hoy en día conocido como Museo Benito Quinquela Martín. Comes with original certificate of authenticity (1949). 1910 he had started appearing in small art exhibitions, mainly in and around La Boca. He obtained the second prize on the Salón Nacional (Spanish, "National Exhibition") in 1920. After an exhibition at Mar del Plata in the same year, he was sent as the Argentine representative to an exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil attended by local personalities including Brazilian president Epitacio Pessoa. By the 1920s Marcelo T. de Alvear and his wife were very fond of Quinquela Martín's works, and this admiration led to a lasting friendship. In 1922, Quinquela Martín was assigned as chancellor of the Argentine Madrid Consulate in Spain. On April, 1923 he exhibited at the Círculo de Bellas Artes of Madrid. Two of his works were acquired by the institution (Buque en reparación and Efecto de Sol), while another two were acquired by the Museum of Modern Art of Madrid. In 1925 he set sail for France becausein his own words"My trip to France is owed to President Alvear, who liked my work and wanted them to be judged by Paris". The Musée du Luxembourg acquired Tormenta en el astillero. On 1927 he left for New York City, where he put part of his work on display at the Anderson Galleries. Accounts say two paintings were bought by "Mr. Havemeyer", who donated them to the Metropolitan Museum of New York. After this exhibition he made several others under sculptor Georgette Blandi's tutelage. Before returning to Buenos Aires, he was invited to Havana by Conde Ribero to exhibit there. On 1929, on a trip to Italy, he had an exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. The Museum of Modern Art of Rome acquired several paintings which were chosen by Benito Mussolini during the display. Quinquela Martín made his last trip in 1930, to London, where he exhibited at the Burlington Gallery. Several British museums acquired his paintings, including the Museum of Arts of London, Museum of Birmingham, Sheffield, Swansea, Cardiff, New Zealand and St. James's Palace.
