Scarce manuscript L.S. 1p. legal folio, Lima, Jan. 7, 1819. San Martin writes from his Headquarters to the Secretary of State of the Republic of Columbia[?], asking that allocations be made in the budget for a Chilean battalion, and be brought to the attention of and approved by "...The Most Excellent Supreme Head of State", i.e. Simon Bolivar. San Martin's victories over the Spanish Army in 1818 liberated Chile and made preparations for the invasion of Peru. Chile's independence formalized in April 1819, three months after this letter, with Peru's independence following shortly thereafter. Negligent foxing in a few spots, otherwise very good condition.

(MARTIN VAN BUREN) JOHN A. DIX. - Current Bid: $100.00

(MARTIN VAN BUREN) JOHN A. DIX. (1798 - 1879) Union major general most remembered for his threat to shoot anyone hauling down the American flag, and his suppression of the bloody New York draft riots. Fine political content A.L.S. 4pp. 4to., Albany, July 16, 1834 to Col. Prosper M. Wetmore, "...The subject referred to in the first part of your letter is one, to which I have given a good deal of reflection; and the result has been a conviction that we had better not commence the discussion of Mr Van Buren's claims to the Presidency. His position is a very strong one and I do not see that it can be undued[?]... by anything we can say or do at this time. In our public meetings we should unquestionably speak of him as worthy, in our opinion, of the highest honors in the gift of the people; but this expression ought to be coupled with the declaration of a willingness to submit to the decision of a National Democratic Convention. A premature discussion of this question by ourselves will, I fear, excite jealousies, and afford at least a pretext for the imputation that we are undertaking to prestate public opinion. We shall ere long have an opportunity of saying all we desire to say in his favor by way of replay to attacks on him: and there is often an advantage, you know, in receiving the enemy's fire before giving your own. Situated as we are, I think it decidedly best to stand quietly by our arms, making occasionally a demonstration through our County and State Conventions. But any contracted[?] newspaper discussion should, I think, be avoided..." With integral transmittal leaf addressed in his hand. Small loss from seal tear affecting two words, usual folds, else fine condition.
