Marino (1901) Marini Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, Painter, Lithographer, Etcher, b. 1901 - d. 1980

At the age of 16, the artist Marino Marini enrolled at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence to study painting and sculpture. While he concentrated on sculpture after he graduated, the artist Marino Marini also produced a significant number of paintings and graphic art pieces over the course of his career.

Marini’s talent is credited with breathing new life into the pre-WWII Italian sculpting scene. Drawing on Renaissance and ancient Etruscan styles and techniques, Marino Marini's sculptures began making an impact in the late 1920s. Marini is probably best remembered for his equestrian-themed sculptures, with his most famous piece being The Angel of the City.

Marino Marini's paintings and graphics are also highly sought after. Collectors browsing vintage lithographs for sale at Invaluable can find vibrant and expressive depictions of wrestlers, jugglers, everyday people, and equestrian-themed works from artists like Marino Marini.

  • MARINO MARINI (Pistoia, 1901 - Milan, 1980). Untitled. Etching, copy 49/50. Signed and numbered in pencil.
    Feb. 20, 2025

MARINO MARINI (Pistoia, 1901 - Milan, 1980). Untitled. Etching, copy 49/50. Signed and numbered in pencil.

    Est: €300 - €350

MARINO MARINI (Pistoia, 1901 - Milan, 1980). Untitled. Etching, copy 49/50. Signed and numbered in pencil. Measurements: 39,5 x 29,8 cm.(footprint); 56 x 45 cm.(paper). Sculptor and painter, Marino Marini began his training at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and from 1929 he devoted himself to traveling the world; he also taught in Monza until 1940 and, from this year, at the Academy of Brera in Milan. In 1930, fully established in the world of sculpture, Marini made large-scale human figures, usually women or acrobats in bronze; but, from 1935, he discovered the themes that would dominate his mature works: the horse and rider and archaic sculpture, particularly Egyptian and Etruscan. Under this sign he produced the works that earned the recognition of his contemporaries: vigorous figures characterized by archaizing forms and great hieratic rigidity, devoid of movement, which seem to carry with them a terrible internal tragedy. He also made a large number of graphic works and portraits in bronze, of which perhaps the best known is that of Igor Stravinsky (1951). Among his works are Gente (1929), El juglar (1933), Púgil (1935) and Milagro (1955). His facet as a painter began around 1948, when he was living in Switzerland. As with his sculptural works, many of his paintings are close to abstract art; over time they became more dramatic and distorted with rougher surfaces. In 1952 he was awarded the Venice Biennale prize.
