American John Marin Watercolor Pencil Painting. Attributed watercolor/pencil to listed artist John Marin. Size: 31 3/4" x 26 1/2" framed, 18 3/4 x 13 1/2" Unframed. John Marin (1870 - 1953) was active/lived in New York, Maine / France. John Marin is known for Painting-modernist landscape-coastal, etching. John Marin was one of America's greatest early Modernists. He studied architecture at the Stevens Institute and worked in that field until 1893 to pursue an art career, studying at the Art Students League and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art with Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase. While traveling through Europe in 1908, Marin met Alfred Stieglitz, who became his chief promoter and dealer. His first show was held in 1909. While Marin was abroad he focused heavily on etching, retuning to America with 103 works. However, at this point he chose to shift his focus to watercolor, using themes of NYC life in Modernist form and structure to illustrate to dynamics of the city in constant flux. His skyscapes showed a Cubist/Futurist manner with sight lines, contrasting weights and rapid brushwork. Marin's work always sold well with Stieglitz as his dealer and he received quite high prices in the 1920s. Marin was honored with a retrospective at the MoMA in 1936. Marin’s contributions to the canon are becoming more widely recognized amongst an international audience, some 70 years after he became the first American to exhibit at the Venice Biennale in 1950. Marin enjoyed continued critical and commercial success throughout his career which was instigated by his meeting Alfred Stieglitz in 1909; a pivotal moment for the artist as Stieglitz championed Marin’s advancements in abstraction and in watercolor as a medium. Perhaps most enticing, however, from the perspectives of both visual iconography and emotional response to the artist’s work, are the ‘bursts’ of energy with which Marin paints. When examining an early watercolor from the artist’s first summer in Maine in 1912, or a late oil painted in 1952, the same fervor is experienced, the same restless and relentless energy with which Marin sought to capture the natural world. Biography from the Archives of askART: John Marin was born in Rutherford, New Jersey in 1870. His father was a public accountant; his mother died only nine days after his birth. He was taken to his maternal grandparents with whom he lived in Weehawken, New Jersey. His grandparents, with their son and two daughters were the only parents Marin was to know; it has been suggested that his father seems to have ignored him. As a child of seven or eight Marin began to sketch and when he was a teenager he had completed his earliest watercolors. His education in the schools of New Jersey was interspersed with summers of hunting, fishing and sketching; he traveled in the Catskills, and as far away as Wisconsin and Minnesota. But formal training was almost incidental to his development as an artist. He is to America what Paul Cezanne was to France - an innovator who helped to oppose the influence of the narrative painters, the illustrators who were more interested in subject than form, in surface than substance. Marin brought to his work a combination of values which, at the turn of the century, was unique in this country: an aliveness of touch, colors that have both sparkle and solidity, and forms that are vibrant with an energy characteristic of our age. Marin established himself as a practicing architect. In the early 1890s, he worked for four architects and by 1893 had designed six houses in Union Hill, New Jersey. At the age of twenty-eight, he decided to become a professional artist and studied briefly at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the Art Students League in New York City. As a watercolorist he had no equal. He used this fluid, spontaneous medium to abstract from objects - skyscrapers, boats, mountains and seas - a simplified anatomy of color and form and to define the pulsation of stresses and movements in the relationship of objects. It was a great disappointment, all his life, that his oil paintings did not achieve the popularity that his watercolors did. From 1905 to 1910 he worked in Europe, where he was influenced by Whistler's watercolors. It was Alfred Stieglitz, Marin's lifetime friend and dealer, whose firm faith in his genius made his position in the art world possible. He developed a distinctive style that he used most characteristically in powerful watercolors of the Maine coast. During the 1920s he provided the dominant force in the movement away from naturalistic representation towards an art of expressive semi-abstraction. He married Marie Jane Hughes after he returned to New York. They had one son, who grew up to run his father's considerable affairs. Marin continued to work at the same steady fast pace as long as he lived. Since 1908 he had produced 1700 paintings, an average of forty a year. He had made the frames for them as well. At the age of seventy-nine, he began to taper off from the days when he painted one hundred watercolors in a summer. He died in 1953. Lot note: The present watercolor, West Point Maine, 1914, represents a major facet of John Marin’s oeuvre, that of his views of the coastal landscape of Maine, in which he captures the restless energy of the sea in the spontaneous style he developed using watercolors. Through his sensitivity to mass, form, color, and line and their dynamic interchanges, Marin provided a precedent for the Abstract Expressionist movement of the late 1950s. Born in Rutherford, New Jersey, Marin did not come to art directly, but instead first studied mechanical drawing and mathematics at the Steven Institute of Technology, and then worked as a draftsman for several architects. At the age of 29, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia from 1899 to 1901, and at the Art Students League in New York from 1901 to 1903. Like many young artists of the time, Marin left for Europe in 1905, where he was to remain for five years. In Paris, he supported himself selling tourist etchings of French landmarks, while experimenting with watercolors after discovering the work of James McNeill Whistler, Paul Cezanne, and Henri Matisse. A turning point came when he met the photographer Edward Steichen in Paris, in the summer of 1909. Steichen introduced Marin to American photographer and art dealer Alfred Stieglitz, which led to his first important exhibition at Stieglitz’s New York gallery, 291, in 1910. Stieglitz became Marin’s friend and champion, exhibiting his work more often than any other artist, other than Georgia O’Keeffe. By 1911, Marin was based in New York and divided the next twenty years between New York, Vermont, and New England. He made his first of what would become annual trips to Maine in 1914. The artist was fascinated by the natural and untouched beauty of the Maine seacoast and landscape, which would provide creative fodder for the rest of his career. It was during this first trip to Maine that West Point, Maine, was executed. Here, the avant-garde ideas he absorbed in Europe, particularly the art of Cézanne and Matisse, are seen at play, yet are melded with the artist’s personal style using luminescent colors and agile brushwork. Horizontal washes of pinkish-yellows and translucent blues billow across the sky. Stronger diagonal strokes of ocher, violet, and turquoise describe the crashing waves and a barely seen shore. The fluid watercolors represent the flux and collision of the natural elements, while the reinforcement of the picture plane reveals Marin’s effort to impose order and structure on the landscape. Through these contrasts, the artist conveys the “great forces at work,” of nature. In West Point, Maine, Marin achieves a translation of motion on paper that represents the artist’s brilliance and impact at its best.

John Marin, American, French, 1870 to 1953, oil painting on canvas depicting a harbor scene, 1941. Signed and dated, lower right. Framed. John Marin was an early American modernist artist. He is known for his abstract landscapes and watercolors. From 1899 to 1901, Marin attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. In Philadelphia he studied with Thomas Pollock Anshutz, Hugh Henry Breckenridge and William Merritt Chase. He also studied at the Art Students League of New York. In 1905, like many American artists Marin went to Europe, initially to Paris. He exhibited his work in the Salon, where he also got his first exposure to modern art. He traveled through Europe for six years, and painted in the Netherlands, Belgium, England, and Italy. In Europe, he mastered a type of watercolor where he achieved an abstract ambience, almost a pure abstraction with color that ranges from transparency to translucency, accompanied by strong opacities, and linear elements, always with a sense of freedom, which became one of his trademarks. One of a kind artwork.

John Marin was a seminal American modernist painter. He was one of the first Americans to employ techniques of abstraction in his calligraphic depictions of landscapes and city streets, as seen in his work Bryant Square (1932). Along with Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, and Georgia O’Keeffe, Marin helped introduce a new aesthetic model for American painters. “I must for myself insist that when finished, that is when all the parts are in place and are working, that now it has become an object and will therefore have its boundaries as definite as the prow, the stern, the sides, and bottom bound as a boat,” he once reflected. Born on December 23, 1870 in Rutherford, NJ, Marin started his career in art later in life, graduating from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1901 at the age of 30. In 1905, he travelled to Europe, where he developed his signature watercolor technique and met the artist Edward Steichen. It was Steichen that introduced his work to the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, who mounted Marin’s first solo show in 1909, and financially supported the artist over the remainder of his career. Marin died on October 2, 1953 in Addison, ME. Today, his works are held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and the Art Institute of Chicago, among others.

A superb, dark impression of this extremely scarce, early etching. Marin (1870-1953) left New York for Paris in the summer of 1905, overlapping with Edward Hopper's own visits there at the time, when the city was under the influence of Late Impressionism and the Fauves were dominating the avant-garde scene (Hopper left for Paris in October 1906 and returned to New York in August 1907). Marin exhibited at the Salone d'Automne several times, along with works by Henri Matisse, Édouard Vuillard and Pierre Bonnard, as well as alongside the 1907 Paul Cézanne retrospective. Though surrounded by the excitement of the center of the art world, Marin's main influence at this time period was the artist James A. M. Whistler (1834-1903). In his European prints, before returning to New York, Marin emulated Whistler's high career, looser style of etching, which he had honed during his 1879-80 stay in Venice (Marin even selected similar vantage points as those used by Whistler in Venice).
