Sonami a déjà attrapé trois serpents. Wandjuk was known as important artist as well as a political activist who protested against mining activities on Aboriginal Land. He was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1979. Typewritten Label on verso reads «One day a man is sitting by a tree thinking of what he can do, and he thinks «I'll go hunting for my dinner». On the way he finds a friend and they go hunting together. His friend already has three snakes and soon they find two women and they decide they will cook the snakes and all eat together. They all go on together and find two goannas which they eat. Then it is time for sleep, so they sleep there together. The next morning the men told the women to stay while they go hunting for turtles. They only got one turtle and they bring it back and find the women sitting under the tree, so they cook and eat the turtle and sleep again. Then the leave the two girls and go fishing by themselves, and catch six fish and one fish which they cook together and eat» Some nail holes are present, some cracks. Estimation 3 000 - 5 000 €

WANDJUK MARIKA (1927 – 1987) DJUNGGAWAK AT PORT BRADSHAW, c.1963 natural earth pigments on eucalyptus bark 110.0 x 48.0 cm (irregular) bears inscription verso: artist’s name, language group 'Riratjinga' together with a description of the story depicted on old label PROVENANCE Painted in the Yirrkala region of North-East Arnhem Land, Northern Territory Gary Bradley, Victoria Thence by descent Private collection, Victoria ESSAY The stretch of rolling sand dunes at Yalangbara (Port Bradshaw) where the apical ancestors of the Dhuwa moiety, the Djang’kawu, landed after their voyage from the east, is the main sacred site of the Wandjuk Marika’s clan, the Rirratjingu. Here, the Djang’kawu women drove their digging sticks into the ground to create freshwater wells and they gave birth to the first human beings. The first creatures they encountered and named were the sacred goanna Djanda and the bush turkey Buwata. Wandjuk has depicted the bush turkeys in pairs wandering across the landscape in search of food; their tracks are clearly visible. The Djanda are associated with fertility and images of the goannas may symbolise the Djang’kawu sisters themselves. In Port Bradshaw two goannas are depicted copulating while others are shown on the sand dunes of Yalangbara. As the goannas climb the dunes, lines of sand trickle down from their claws creating the distinctive Rirratjingu clan design that appears as blocks of parallel cross-hatched patterning. Related paintings by Wandjuk Marika in public collections that feature Djanda and Buwata include Djang’kawu story, 1964, in the collection of the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory;1 and Sunset, 1982, in the collection of the National Gallery of Australia.2 1.
