Milada Marešová created a unique artistic expression, which she used to tell human stories and destinies. The bearers of the story are often women - sometimes challenging, sometimes immersed in their own hard-to-capture thoughts. Her paintings were strongly transcending the times in their social aspect. More than a critique of social conditions, they depict humanity and the human condition. It is the moments of important life milestones that recur in Milada Marešová's paintings, and brides or widows become archetypes of real unidealised women. Framed under anti-reflective glass with UV filter. Technique: watercolour, indian ink, cardboard, Signed: sign. lower right: Marešová 1930

Life in interwar Europe became the central theme of Milada Marešová's work, and the social theme brought her great recognition at the exhibition in the Aventine Mansard in Prague. Particularly remarkable is her striving for fidelity and rawness of subject and people without unnecessary idealization or objectification. The paintings, in their skillful artistic abbreviation, speak of authentic experience and are pioneering in their artistic origins - Milada Marešová is often referred to as the forerunner of Czech comics. MILADA MAREŠOVÁ 1901 - 1987 - GIRL WITH DANDELIONS

        Est: -

A girl in the middle of a dark forest collects blooming dandelions. Dressed in glowing dandelion yellow, young and smiling, she creates an impressive and emphatic counterpoint to the forest sinking into darkness and sleep. Yellow's similarity to sunlit skies and summer flowers that beckon life all around cannot be overlooked, and yellow is often an important symbol in visual arts. Some painters have even adopted sun yellow as manuscript. The girl with the dandelions represents a symbol - she is the last bright dandelion in the middle of a faded meadow and becomes a reminder of life in a cooling world. Milada Marešová showed exceptional talent in capturing different positions of life. He tells stories, captures human destinies, and often even ironizes reality. Although it was almost forgotten, today it is again receiving justified attention due to its strong social feeling and easily recognizable artistic shorthand, which could even be described as a forerunner of today's comic creation. Today, Milada Marešová is already recognized as a versatile artist who has made a significant contribution to the repertoire of Czech art and is sought after by collectors. MILADA MAREŠOVÁ 1901 - 1987 - GIRL IN YELLOW DRESS

        Est: -

Milada Marešová's brilliant and painterly mature composition Girl in Yellow dress comes from the author's family. The visually arresting image creates a tension that evokes the optically dominant yellow awakening the senses and the dreamy introspective expression of the portraiture that contrasts with expectation. The gesture of white-gloved hands protecting a single rose bud reveals a fragile beauty that will undoubtedly not escape a single observer, but it is not certain what the portrait herself thinks about it. The painting belongs to the period after the exhibition in the prestigious Aventine Mansard in Prague, when Milada Marešová achieved public recognition. She was undoubtedly influenced by her stay in Paris, where she attended František Kupka's lectures and subsequently captured the atmosphere of the big city in various forms, looked for the presence of people, the subway, parks, cafes and showed a deep painterly sense of the human psyche. Her paintings strongly transcended their time with their social aspect. More than a critique of social conditions, they mainly depict humanity, the human destiny, and the woman often finds herself at the center of the composition, where she invites the viewer to interact with her eyes. MILADA MAREŠOVÁ 1901 - 1987 - WOMAN IN GRIEF

        Est: -

Deep interest in the feminine world was evident in Milada Marešová's work from the very beginning. These were non-idealized likenesses of real people and destinies, sketches of the human psyche. In her view, widows become silent, static and melancholic symbols, remnants of distress and an existence doomed to solitude. They form a complementary piece to her portraits of brides, which, with their non-participating and often introverted conception, foreshadow the first step into marriage - an inevitable fate and a life on the road to grief. Brides and widows are a reflection of the Marian cult, which depicts female love even in its position of total devotion and necessary sacrifice. In 1924, everyday life in Prague entered Milada Marešová's work. She perceives individual individuals in its entirety, often quite unusual, seeks out diverse types of people and succeeds in describing their moods and peculiarities perfectly. Although they seem realistic at first glance, they also show a certain grotesqueness and occur in illogical places. It was this amazing realism combined with their unspoken inner life and irony that manifested itself in Milady Marešová's work throughout the twenties. MILADA MAREŠOVÁ 1901 - 1987 - DIALOGUE

        Est: -

Maluje i různé znevýhodněné jedince, ženy a samotáře v krajině velkoměsta. S pozoruhodnou věrohodností zachycuje v tom velkém hemžení osamění jednotlivce, který musí v realitě žít, ale nepřestává snít. Technique: Oil on canvas, Signed: Left center "M. Marešová"

After 1924, Milada Marešová began to devote herself fully to art and captured the atmosphere of the city in various forms, seeking the presence of people, the subway, parks, cafes and, in this case, swimming pools. The pivotal work Na plovárně is one of the iconic representatives of her lyrical and dreamy manuscript with elements of magical realism and strong reflections on social issues. Particularly noteworthy is her focus on the "women's issue", where she follows burning social issues and paints women in solitary introspection in the middle of it all. The women in Milady Marešová's paintings often look to the viewer and challenge him to try to look into their thoughts. The work Na plovárně is undoubtedly one of the uniqueness on the auction market and has also become the face of a monograph: Milada Marešová: a painter of a new reality. An interesting fact is the tangible structure of the sand, which is part of the beach painting. Milada Marešová's work echoes serious tones, which are based on sensitivity to social injustice and interest in people on the margins of society, especially during the economic crisis of the 1930s. Scenes from the orphanage also come from the same period. The gloomy environment of the Court with barred windows is all the more impressive because it foreshadows the years of suffering that Milada Marešová spent in prison. Marešová was primarily an interwar painter, in 1940 she was arrested by the Gestapo for her work during the war period and for participating in the magazine V boj. She recorded strongly emotional portraits of fellow prisoners in a women's prison. Technique: Watercolour on paper, Signed: Lower left "Milada Marešová 1928"

Milada Maresová (Czech, 1901-1987), "The Banjo Dance", oil on canvas, signed lower left, 22 in. x 30 in., framed, together with signed copies of "Svatebni Kosile - The Spectre's Bride" from 1930, and "Arabske Biblicke Tradice", both with illustrations by Maresová. Note: Maresová's early success as a painter was overshadowed by her later political difficulties. She initially enrolled at the local School of Decorative Arts before attending the Prague Academy, studying under the Austrian-born Vojtech Hynais (1854-1925). In 1923 she moved to Paris where she apprenticed with Franti_ek Kupka (1871-1957), an early proponent of the abstract art movement. Mare_ová debuted in Prague in 1925 at the prestigious Topicuv Salon and continued to exhibit in local galleries for the next several years. In the late '20s and '30s, she supplemented her income by working as an illustrator for a variety of journals, including one which had been banned by the government. Arrested and convicted by the Gestapo, she was sentenced to 12 years in the women's penitentiary. During her incarceration, Maresová continued to draw and upon her release she illustrated children's books. She did not return to painting until the '60s. In 2008 the Moravska galerie (Moravian Gallery) in Brno, Czech Republic featured a solo exhibition of her work. Reference: www.moravska-galerie.cz
