Marek, Charles S.

Artist, Civil Engineer

Born August 8, 1891 at Malsice, Czechoslovakia. Son of Joseph J. and Barbara Bohak Marek. Educated in Czechoslovakia, he graduated from a three year course at Meyer Both College, Chicago. Shortly after coming to Hawaii in 1915, Mr. Marek worked as a Fire control and later Topographical Draftsman in military service. During WWI, he served with the U.S. Army Hawaiian Department headquarters and later as student at Officers School, Camp Fremont California. He married Berlinda Kuulei Murray at Honolulu, April 11, 1921. They had one daughter LaVerne Jean Bradley.

From 1922, he was in charge of all mapping and cadastral surveys in the department Engineer’s office, and in 1930 was appointed a Fortification Engineer and subsequently a Chief Engineer for the Hawaiian Dept.

A member of the Army Reserves, he was called back to active duty before December 7, 1941, and served as Real Estate and Contracting Officer for the Pacific Ocean Areas. In 1944, he was assigned as an Engineer Officer with the Army Post and Service Command.

From the time he was placed on the U.S. Army Retired List September 1, 1951, Colonel Marek has devoted most of his spare time to marine and landscape painting, which has been his favorite lifetime pursuit.

He is a member of the National Geographic Society, Knights of Pythias, President of the Reserve Officers Association and President of the Association of Honolulu Artists.
