LUIS MARCO PÉREZ (Fuentelespino de Moya, 1896- Madrid, 1983). "Old mountain man". Bronze. Attached document of authorship issued by the Pilares Art Gallery (Cuenca). Measurements: 40 x 29 x 23 cm. Round sculpture in which a realistic male face can be seen. The work shows us a truthful vision by furrowing the face with wrinkles. However, the author does not convey a hopeless tone of old age, as the main character is smiling slightly. A work very similar to the present one can be found in the collection of the Museu Nacional d'art de Catalunya, for those who acquired his work at the "Exposició Nacional de Belles Arts" in Barcelona in 1944. Despite his origins in Cuenca, Marco Pérez moved to Valencia when he was only 12 years old, where he began his training at the Royal Academy of San Carlos. In 1919 he travelled to Madrid with a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, an education which he complemented with lessons at the workshop of the artist José Ortels. He then moved to Italy, and on his return to Spain he began to work as a teacher at the School of Arts and Crafts of the School of Cuenca, after having been awarded several medals at the Circle of Fine Arts, including the first medal in 1926, a prize which was repeated in 1930. In 1928, he was appointed Municipal Sculptor of Cuenca with the task of making a work for each Holy Week, although most of them were lost during the Civil War. Nowadays, the Museum of the Holy Week of Cuenca conserves 19 pasos that the master made after the end of the war. At the outbreak of the conflict, Marco Pérez was in Valencia and became a member of the Board for the Seizure and Protection of the Artistic Treasure. At the end of the war, he returned to Cuenca and in 1940 he moved to Madrid as a teacher of modelling at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid, although he finally obtained the chair of sculpture at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts. His work not only reflected religious themes but also profane ones, such as "Idilio Ibérico", which was awarded and acquired by the State in 1924 for the Museum of Modern Art, or many of the public sculptures in the city of Cuenca. In the last years of his life he also worked as a decorator and furniture designer with projects such as the Gran Vía Cinema.

Sculptor and one of the last image-makers of the 20th century, in spite of his origin from Cuenca, Marco Pérez moved to Valencia when he was only 12 years old, where he began his training, entering the Royal Academy of San Carlos.
