          NATHANIEL MARCHANT (BRITISH, 1739-1816) INTAGLIO CASTS, LOT OF SIX, each plaster cast from his One Hundred Impressions from Gems, depicting a Classical bust or allegorical figure, four being signed. Professionally framed in in three shadowbox frames. Late 18th century. 7 3/4" SQ to 13 1/4" x 9 1/4" OA. Catalogue Note: Marchant was the most famous gem engraver of the late 18th/early 19th century, serving as the gem sculpture to the Prince of Wales and engraved to The King. These intaglio casts were direct impressions from his original engraved chalcedony gems executed around 1790. The artist sold these in sets by subscription. The originals were destroyed during the German Blitz of 1941.

Hercules, engraved intaglio on amber glass, signed by Nathaniel Marchant, 20 x 20mm, tiny nick to rim of verso, together with Artemis holding a deer, engraved intaglio on amethyst glass, signed by Nathaniel Marchant, 22 x 18 mm, two chips to rim of recto and verso, with 18 other late 18th and early 19th century intaglios on varicoloured glass, of oval, square and rectangular form, various sizes and subjects including a clear glass intaglio of a putto atop a lion, engraved 'Amor vincit omnia', another of a dog, engraved 'When this dog barks our friendship ends', a few chipped Qty: (20) Footnote: Nathaniel Marchant studied under Edward Burch. After spending time in Rome, he became a noted engraver of intaglios, medals, and cameos. He also became assistant engraver to the mint, gem sculptor to the Prince of Wales, and engraver to the king. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1809.

          PLASTER IMPRESSION OF A NATHANIEL MARCHANT GEM AND THREE GLASS PASTE GEMS AFTER JAMES TASSIE Nathaniel Marchant (1739-1816) was an English gem engraver and a member of the Royal Academy. The three gems after James Tassie depicting Leda and the Swan, Napoleon, and an eagle are similar but slightly different to designs pictured in Rudolph Erich Raspe's catalog of Catherine the Great's Tassie collection, varying sizes with the largest 1.25 in. (4) Provenance: Part of a medallion collection that descended in the family of a British Tassie collector. Montgomery Family, United Kingdom from at least the mid 19th century, to the present owner.
