Sullivan's illustrated edition of the 'Pirate and the Three Cutters' by Captain Frederick Marryat, a Naval Officer and early proponent of pirate adventure novels, was published in 1897. Robinson's illustration is for the 'Legend of River and Mountain', a collection of folk tales and legends written by Carmen Sylva, the nom-de-plume of Elisabeth of Wied, Queen of Romania.

However, his style evolved and became more experimental as he embraced the Fauvist movement. Fauvism, characterised by its vibrant colours and bold brushstrokes, rejected naturalistic representation in favor of intense emotional expression and heightened visual impact. Marchand's paintings often depicted landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. His Fauvist works showcased his use of vivid, non-representational colours and simplified forms. He employed strong brushwork and a sense of spontaneity, capturing the essence of the subject rather than focusing on realistic details. During his career, Marchand participated in several influential exhibitions, including the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des IndÃ©pendants, where Fauvist artists showcased their groundbreaking works. He was also associated with other prominent artists of the time, such as Henri Matisse and AndrÃ© Derain.

The frame has scuff marks and the canvas detailing has frayed. The piece has some minor paint loss in areas, particularly the sky; and a substance appears to be over the surface. Furthermore, there is craqueler over the surface. On the right hand side there is a dent in the piece, which has caused a crack and some paint loss (approx 5cm) It is also important to note there is paint loss at the edges, most likely caused by the frame. The piece is in fair condition.

Oil on canvas Signed lower left 28 x 30cm. (11 x 11 3/4in.) Provenance: Crane Kalman Gallery, London Acquired from the above by the present owner Marchand was born in Paris in 1883. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts between 1902-1909. In 1910, he exhibited Still Life with Bananas at the Manet and the Post-Impressionists show organised by Roger Fry. His work was hung alongside works by Edouard Manet, Paul Cezanne and Pablo Picasso. Marchand became a member of the Bloomsbury Group. Towards the end of the 1910s he settled with a community of artists in Céret including Max Jacob and Auguste Herbin. Marchand mixed with influential circles and it is likely that he came in contact with Modigliani in Paris. The portrait of the artist captures a moment in time as Modigliani glances through the viewer out of the canvas. Marchand works with a subdued colour palette which creates a sense of calm and fondness between the artist and sitter.
