MIGUEL MARCH (Valencia, 1633 - 1670). "Still life". Oil on canvas. Attached is a study issued by Don José Gómez Frechina. It has repainting and restorations. Measurements: 94 x 124 cm. The one we present here is a clearly baroque still life, heir of the Spanish naturalist still life of the beginning of the 17th century in the chromatic and light aspects, and also in a certain way in the way of arranging the different elements, but that already reveals an advance towards the full baroque with the incorporation of live animals, that contribute dynamism and narrative, although they appear captured with the violence and the tension typical of the baroque still life. Thus, we see a clear, centred composition organised around a table. The elements appear on a flat, indeterminate surface, of which we do not see the outline, unlike what was more common at the time. The background is not defined either, although we are allowed to intuit a dark wall, from whose shadows the objects and animals seem to emerge. The slight baroque asymmetry of the composition is determined by the presence, in the background. As was usual in Spanish still lifes of the period, all the elements in the composition are worked with great naturalism; the brushstrokes are dense, impastoed and very controlled, deriving from the influence of Velázquez, and reflect the different qualities of the food, animals and objects with particular verisimilitude. These qualities are further enhanced by the carefully studied lighting, of Tenebrist heritage, which falls directly on the elements the painter wishes to emphasise, leaving the rest enveloped in a nuanced half-light. This illusion of reality is reinforced by the contrasting, expressive lighting, which in turn is based on a typical naturalistic Baroque colour scheme centred on earthy and ochre tones, with strategically placed touches of carmine and white to create a zigzagging rhythm that guides the eye from the foreground to the background. The multitude of elements, and the disparity between them, was a common element in Miguel March's still lifes, in fact, in his famous work The Ear, we can appreciate this interest in the wide-ranging capture of tactile and sensorial values. A Spanish Baroque painter born in Valencia, Miguel March was the son and disciple of Esteban March. Orellana states that after his father's death he went to Italy, where he completed his training at the school of Carlo Maratta. However, there is no trace of the Italian master in his work. Following his father's models, March painted battle scenes as well as other genres, including religious and portraits. However, the best known of his output are his still lifes of hunting and allegorical paintings, which also demonstrate his mastery as a still life painter. He is currently represented in the Museo de Bellas Artes in Valencia, the Museo de Játiva and the Museo del Prado, as well as in various private collections.
