Vicente March Marco Sold at Auction Prices

Figure painter, Painter, b. 1859 - d. 1927

Vicente March y Marco (27 December 1859, Valencia - 31 March 1927, Benigànim)[1] was a Spanish costumbrista painter; known primarily for portraits and landscapes. He was also an amateur photographer. Most sources indicate that he died sometime in 1914.

He received his artistic education at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos, where he studied with Gonzalo Salvá (1845-1923) and Francisco Domingo Marqués.

In 1876, he competed in a contest for a grant to study in Rome and came in second-place. As a result, his Professor, Domingo, encouraged him to go to Rome regardless, if he could. After several years of teaching at the Escuela, this was accomplished in 1887, when he and a friend were able to go there at their own expense.[1]

Once in Rome, they found a place in the workshops at the Palazzo Patrizi on the Via Margutta, where they shared a studio with other Spanish artists (mostly Valencians), including Salvador Sánchez Barbudo and the brothers José and Mariano Benlliure, with whom he formed a lifelong friendship.[1] He completed his education at the Accademia Chigi; spending summers in Naples and Venice. Following a trip to Morocco and Egypt, he produced numerous Orientalist paintings.

After 1888, he also exhibited regularly in Berlín and Munich, winning several awards. In 1893, he won a Silver Medal at the Esposizione Internazionale di Roma with his painting "The Spinner". The following year, he was one of the artists who worked on an album dedicated to Queen Maria Christina.[1]

In 1903, a few years after he was married, he left Rome and settled in Xàtiva, where his wife's family was from. Later, the Spanish government named him a Knight in the Order of Charles III. Most of his works in Spain are in the possession of private collectors, as the bulk of his paintings were sold abroad. In 1994, a major retrospective was held by the local government of Subiaco, near Rome.

VICENTE MARCH Y MARCO (Valencia, 1859 - 1927). "The Christening". Oil on panel. Signed and located in the lower right corner. Size: 35 x 50.5 cm; 72 x 84.5 cm (frame). In this panel Vicente March offers us a nineteenth-century image contextualised in the interior of a church in which a baptism is being celebrated. The light, concentrated on the left, illuminates a young mother holding her child in her arms, together with the rest of the child's family. In front of them is an elderly priest accompanied by two altar boys. The chapel in which the scene takes place is notable for its architecture and its meticulous decorative elements: pointed arches, Renaissance sculptures, Baroque altarpieces and ceiling paintings demonstrate March's attention to detail, while the figures are dressed in their best clothes and situated in different positions, most of them attentive to the main event. This is a work belonging to the genre of "de casacons", elaborately painted and descriptive scenes set in the 17th and 18th centuries, very much to the taste of the clientele of the second half of the 19th century. In France these works, known as "de tableutin", were mainly of a gallant nature, inspired by the works of 18th-century French authors such as Boucher and Watteau. In Spain, the reference point was Velázquez and his contemporaries, which is why we will more often see scenes of musketeers and other 17th-century characters. Here, on the other hand, he sought a subject more in keeping with 19th-century everyday life, whose themes were approached in a similar way to this painting. A Valencian painter trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts, Vicente March completed his studies in Rome at the Chigi academy. Later he also travelled to North Africa, where he began to paint Orientalist themes. During his lifetime he received numerous prizes and honours, such as the silver medal at the Valencia Regional Exhibition (1881), prizes at the Berlin and Munich exhibitions at which he regularly presented his work from 1888 onwards, the silver medal at the Rome International Exhibition (1893) and, to round off his career, the appointment as Knight of the Order of Charles III by the Spanish government shortly before his death. VICENTE MARCH Y MARCO (Valencia, 1859 - 1927). "Street of Subiaco", Rome. Oil on panel. Signed and located in the lower left corner. Size: 27.5 x 43.5 cm; 50 x 65.5 cm (frame). In this panel we see March's personal costumbrist vision of the Rome of his time, featuring popular characters engaged in their daily chores, in romantic settings of ancient rural architecture, marked by the passage of time. The characters, captured in relaxed attitudes, converse with each other in the intense light of the Roman town of Subiaco, oblivious to our gaze: a stall selling pots under the porch of a house that is practically in ruins, children playing with the scant means at their disposal and a group of clothes hung out in the background reveal the costumbrista character that determined March's work, as well as the exceptional narrative quality of his works. Vicente March trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia. In 1876 he came second in the competition to obtain the pension in Rome and, encouraged by his teacher Francisco Domingo, in 1887 he moved to the Italian capital at his own expense. Once there he settled in the Spanish artists' colony and continued his training at the Chigi academy. In Italy, during the summer, he spent long periods in Venice, Naples and Assisi with the Benlliure brothers, also painters, and especially in Subiaco, a town with a medieval appearance where another of his painter friends, Mariano Barbasán, lived. Influenced by the atmosphere of this circle, he mainly painted Italian genre scenes, the roots of which can be found in the 17th and 18th centuries. Later, after a trip to Morocco and Egypt, he developed a period with orientalist scenes. The bulk of March's work is distributed in Germany, Belgium, Brazil, England, the United States, Argentina, France and Sweden. His work is little represented in Spain and is concentrated in the hands of private individuals. Costumbrismo painting is a genre in which popular types and attitudes, behaviour, values and habits common to a specific group of the population, region or class are described by means of satirical, nostalgic or narrative depictions of the environments, customs, dress, festivals and entertainments, traditions, trades and representative types of a society. The idea of costumbrismo arose from an attempt to understand reality, or more precisely, reality understood in a particular way, from a specific point of view. Although we find precedents dating back to the Baroque period, it was during the 19th century that this genre reached its peak. Thus, the new genre of genre painting was born as a way of interpreting a growing sense of national consciousness, now present in the middle classes as they advanced towards social hegemony. To a certain extent, the painters' concern was to deepen the vision of their country through a language, that of painting, which everyone could understand, thus helping the common people to grasp the nature and meaning of their nationality, especially as it had manifested itself in the recent past, still vivid in the memory of the elders. It involved, therefore, the task of integrating a new reality with the familiar. Sometimes such a reality was painted because of how interesting it was in itself, or because it was a new reality.
