Prachtvoller, gratiger und in den Schwärzen tiefer Druck mit zartem Plattenton, breitem Rand und umlaufenden Schöpfrand. Aquatint etching with relief printing on GVA Pro wove paper. Signed and numbered. - Isolated slight traces of colour inherent to the work in the left margin, on the verso with surface soiling. Very good overall. Gedruckt von Taller Ibograf, Ibiza. Das Motiv fand Anwendung für das Plakat zur Ausstellung in der Galerie van der Voort, Ibiza, 1975, hier ohne die Schrift. Conrad Marca-Relli gehörte zu den bedeutenden und frühen Vertretern des Abstrakten Expressionismus der New York School. 1956 nahm er an der XXVIII. Biennale von Venedig im Amerikanischen Pavillon teil und 1959 waren Werke von ihm auf der documenta 2 in Kassel zu sehen. Since its inception in 1912 by Picasso and Braque, collage has undergone many formal transformations, yet it has remained a corollary to painting. Even a master collagist, Jean Arp, could refer to collage as a "less-refined" medium. Beginning in 1953, Marca-Relli accepted the potential risks inherent in collage and developed it as a complete pictorial system essentially without precedent in modern art. He has used it neither as a single element of structural reordering of reality as in cubist collage, nor as ambiguous fragments evoking exterior associations as did the Surrealists. Rather, Marca-Relli has extended collage to the point where it now carries its own full and distinct range of formal and emotive means (…) Works of 1962 (…) use vinyl sheets nailed directly to a wooden support. Following his innate tendency to formal reduction and simplicity, the shapes gradually cast off traces of biomorphism and became progressively fewer in number, larger and more open”. Conrad Marca Relli was an American artist who belonged to the early generation of Abstract Expressionist artists of the New York school whose artistic innovation of the 1950s had been recognised throughout the Atlantic, including Paris. New York School Abstract Expressionism, represented by Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell, Marca-Relli and others, became a leading art movement of the post-war era. Marca Relli was born in Boston but during his childhood, he moved to New York City. In 1930 he began studying at Cooper Union for a year. He later began working for the Works Progress Administration, first as a teacher and then with the mural painting divisions of the Federal Art Project. It was during this period that he won the Logan Medal of Arts. Marca-Relli taught at Yale University from 1954 to 1955 and from 1959 to 1960, and at the University of California at Berkeley. In 1953, he bought a house near Jackson Pollock's home in Springs, East Hampton. However, as his career progressed, he increasingly distanced himself from the New York School. After the war, Marca-Relli joined the "Downtown Group" which represented a group of artists who found studios in lower Manhattan in the area bounded by 8th and 12th Streets between First and Sixth Avenues in the late 1940s and early 1950s. During the 1940s and early 1950s, he was active in the avant-garde art world in Greenwich Village. These artists were called the "Downtown Group" instead of the "Uptown Group" established during the war at The Art of This Century gallery, and their first solo exhibition was in New York in 1948. In 1949, Marca-Relli was one of the founders of the "Artists' Club" located at 39 East 8th Street and was selected by his fellow artists to appear in the Ninth Street Show held in 1951. The show was located at 60 East 9th Street on the first floor and in the basement of a building that was about to be demolished. The artists celebrated not only the presence of dealers, collectors and museum people on Ninth Street, and the resulting exposure of their work, but also the creation and strength of a living community of significant dimensions. His work includes primitive cityscapes, still lifes, circus motifs and architectural motifs. Marca-Relli's work is often aesthetically reminiscent of the Italian surrealist painter Giorgio de Chirico. Throughout his career, Marca-Relli created collages on a monumental scale. He combined oil painting and collage, employing intense colours, broken surfaces and expressionistic splashes. He also experimented with metal and vinyl materials. Over the years, the collages developed an abstract simplicity, evidenced by black or sombre colours and rectangular shapes isolated against a neutral background.
