Harmon Percy Marble 1870-1945 Original Photographs

Featured in this lot is these original photographs from American photographer Harmon Percy Marble born in 1870 and died in 1945. There are four original photographs in this collection. The first is is a photograph of Hopi dancers these dances would have been forbidden to attend for Anglo-Americans. The second photograph is from 1911 of the Navajo National Monument in Arizona and is a view of the eastern half of Kiet Siel which is the largest cliff dwelling ruin in Arizona. The third photograph is from 1911 of a Sioux woman wearing a full length breastplate with sections of large beads and hairpipe bones throughout. The last doesn't come with information on the photograph but is a photograph of a Native American man holding a rope coiled up in his hand. The condition of this collection of original photographs is well preserved behind protective sleeves with some wear to the photographs consistent with age. The measurements of these photographs is 5" x 7".

Original Harmon Percy Marble Photographs

Offered in this lot is a collection of four original Harmon Percy Marble photographs. Harmon Percival Marble (November 5, 1870 February 3, 1945) was an American journalist and politician. He was the mayor of Las Vegas from 1938 to 1939 and was a photographer of Native Americans. Marble is known as a prolific photographer of Native Americans. During his government career with Indian Service, he took advantage of opportunities of his positions to take hundreds of photographs of the Navajo, Menominee, and Sioux tribes. His photographs were inconsistently exposed, often poorly composed and poorly printed. However, this lack of artistic sense rendered photos that offer an unvarnished portraiture of the indigenous people. In this collection is a photo of a man holding the lead to a horse out of the photo, a woman in elaborate dress. On the back of this photo is lot # and description of the photo. The next two photos also have provenance on the back of them with lot numbers and information about the photo. The first is of the "Kiet Siel" cliff dwelling and the next is of a "Butterfly" ceremony dance. This photograph has previously sold by itself for $650. The photographs measure 5" X 7" and are in plastic protector sleeves and in very good condition for their over 100-year-old age.

Original Harmon Percy Marble Framed Photograph

For your consideration is this large original black and white photograph taken by Harmon Percy Marble: Sioux Couple with White Lady. Harmon Percy Marble was born in Nebraska in 1870 and worked in the newspaper business there as a young man, even founding his own newspaper in 1897--The Humboldt Leader. In 1910 he started working for the U.S. Government, a year later entering the Indian Service with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. It was during this period, 1910-1926, that he became an avid photographer, shooting hundreds of photos of the Native Americans with whom he worked. In his years working for the Indian Service, he lived among Navajo in Arizona, Menominee in Wisconsin, the Sioux in South Dakota, and the Southern Pueblos in New Mexico. It was during his time in South Dakota among the Sioux that this photo was taken--in the early 1920's. Marble's photos are noted among historians for capturing the unvarnished realities of everyday life for Native Americans. Since he lived among them, he was also often able to get them pose in their most striking outfits for the tourists. This photo is indeed one of those. The photo shows a Sioux Chief and his wife impressively arrayed and posing with a white lady tourist. Fixed to the back of the framed photo is a description of what the Sioux couple are each wearing (see photos). The photo is nicely framed and matted. It is in good condition. The visible photo measures about 14 1/4" x 19 1/4". Framed it measures 22 1/2" x 26 1/2".

A lot of eight silver gelatin photographs depicting various Native American scenes that demonstrate Percy's ethnographic intent, including several depicting Hopi Kachina dancers, one depicting a man cleaning a deer in Taos, a street scene in a Hopi village, the Hopi snake dance ceremony, a natural formation of eroded sandstone known as Baby Rocks on the Navajo reservation, the Hope Butterfly Dance, and a man standing in front of a row of suspended curing animal hides. Marble was a prolific photographer who was especially interested in depicting Native American subjects. He took hundreds of photos of Navajo, Menominee, Hopi, and Sioux peoples. Size: photos measure 5" L x 7" W (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm) An accompanying label states in part, "Harmon Percy Marble was a prolific Native American photographer (and a mayor of Las Vegas). Born in Nebraska in 1870, Marble owned a newspaper, sold it, and went to work for the government Indian Service in 1911. His assignments took him to the Navajo Reservation; he worked on the Navajo Reservation, with the Sioux tribes and with the Southern Pueblos. He even owned a cigar store in Long Beach, California. While Marble's images lack the technical quality of Edward Curtis, his work is uncontrived and shows instead the actual reality of life in Indian villages and plains, unadorned, and unromanticized. As such they have profound anthropological and even spiritual value."
