Peter Maralwanga circa 1916-1987 NAMARRKON (THE LIGHTNING MAN) (1980) natural earth pigments on eucalyptus bark 97 X 36CM PROVENANCE Painted at Oenpelli (Gunbalanya), Western Arnhem Land Private Collection, United States of America This painting is sold with documentation that reads: 'Namarrkon lives in a billabong not far from Numbumah Rock during the dry season, only venturing forth on occasions to hunt for food among the cabbage tree palms around his lagoon. No Aboriginal would venture near this lagoon, or touch the cabbage tree either for basket making or eating the young leaves at the top. He therefore remains undisturbed and happy, and only growls in his thunder voice if somebody comes too close to his home. In the wet he lives among the storm clouds, sitting down and watching the people below. This is the time he is angry and creates flashes of lightning, loud thunder and then torrential rain. Sometimes he takes up one of the stone axes protruding from his elbows and knees and throws it down to earth, where it can cleave a tree or a person. Namarrkon is honoured in song and dance during ceremonies, so that he remains happy and does not alter the balance of the seasons.' OTHER NOTES GST is applicable to hammer price of this lot PROPERTY FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
