Zhang Xiaogang (b. 1958) Zhang Xiaogang was born in Kunming, the capital of the Yunnan Province in South China in 1958. With the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution in 1966, his parents were forced to leave their governmental positions and leave behind Zhang and his three brothers to join an ‘educational camp’ on the countryside. Zhang was admitted to the prestigious Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts in Chongqing in 1976, the year of the collapse of the Cultural Revolution. He joined the Chinese New Wave movement in 1985. A year later, he founded the South West Art Group together with 80 fellow artists such as Mao Xuhui, Pan Dehei and Ye Yongqing. He presented the series ‘Bloodlines: Big Family’ in 1995 at the 46. Venice Biennale. Next to Wang Guangyi, Xu Beihong and Wu Guanzhong, Zhang Xiaogang ranks amongst the most prolific contemporary Chinese artists.
