Dimensions : 27 x 35 cm Peintre de compositions animées, de figures et de portraits, d’animaux et de natures mortes, de paysages, peintre à la gouache et aquarelliste, il est également décorateur. Troisième fils du célèbre impressionniste, il étudie la peinture avec son père avec qui il apprend à aimer la nature dans le sillage de l’impressionnisme représenté alors par Monet, Renoir, Gauguin ou Cézanne, tous amis du maitres et visiteur fréquents dans la maison de Pissarro. C’est dans ce style qu’il débute en peignant une série de paysages autour de Pontoise et Eragny et en 1894, il décide de prendre le pseudonyme de Manzana, le nom de sa grand-mère avant de prendre définitivement le nom de Manzana-Pissarro en 1910. Dès le début de siècle, il participe régulièrement au Salon d’Automne et au Salon des Indépendants mais ce sont surtout ses expositions personnelles dans les galeries les plus en vue qui lui apporte la reconnaissance comme chez Paul Durand-Ruel, Eugène Druet et Ambroise Vollard, le tout couronné par une très importante exposition en 1914 aux Arts Décoratifs du Louvre où il montre 311 œuvres dont tapisseries, tapis, meubles, verreries, peintures décoratives, gravures et lithographies. Il continuera à exposer jusqu’à la fin des années 30, partageant son temps entre Andelys et Paris excepté pendant la période de guerre qu’il passera à Casablanca. S’il est sympathisant anarchiste partageant de son père le néo-impressionnisme, Manzana cherche à partir de 1906 d’autres moyens d’expression par la conception d’objets décoratifs et meubles. Influencé fortement par les scènes tahitiennes et martiniquaises de Gauguin, il développe un penchant pour l’orientalisme, commençant à se manifester par ses expériences avec l’or, l’argent et la peinture au cuivre dont il rehausse ses aquarelles. Dans le même élan, ses peintures puisent fréquemment leur inspiration dans les estampes japonaises, les toiles exotiques de Gauguin et Les Milles et Une Nuits. "Refreshing" Colour engraving 43 x 34 cm on view and with frame 66 x 55 cm, c.1894-1910, signed lower right "G. MANZANA". A libertarian and anarchist painter, he was the third son of the impressionist painter Camille Pissarro. In 1894, he chose his grandmother's name "MANZANA" as his pseudonym. In 1910 he adopted his definitive artist's name "MANZANA-PISSARRO". He rubbed shoulders with his father's friends, including Monet, Renoir, Cézanne and above all Gauguin, who gave him a taste for the exoticism in his works.
