Gelatin silver print, exhibition print, printed in the 1980s 48,3 x 32,7 cm Annotated in an unidentified hand in pencil on the reverse The iconic image shows an aunt at the funeral of her nephew whom she adopted and has been killed in Vietnam. "In the course of an assignment in South Carolina I came upon a typical African-American church sitting alone in the middle of the cotton fields. What was different was the fact that a U.S. Army bus was parked in front of the church. It immediately occurred to me that this could be the funeral of a solider killed in Vietnam. It all happened within a half hour. Look Magazine published six of the pictures, and the story won an Art Directors’ Award in 1966."

Born to Greek immigrant parents, the American photographer Constantine Manos is known for his images of Boston and Greece. His work is in various prominent museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, France. – Traces of previous mounting on the verso, some buckling in mid portion, otherwise in very good condition.
