She was taught by her father, his friend the artist Ethel Walker and trained at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Cathleen became an established artist in her own right and was elected to the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Following her 1926 marriage to Francis Archibald Kelhead Douglas, the eleventh Marquess of Queesberry, she became unwillingly known as the 'Painting Peeress' (see ed. Alice Strang, Modern Scottish Women: Painters and Sculptors 1885-1965, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh, 2015, exh. cat., p. 76).

Oil on canvas London, England, 1913 Harrington Mann (1864-1937) - Scottish painter Signed and dated lower right 'Harrington Mann 1913' In gold frame Dimensions: 124.4 x 78.7 cm Good condition Provenance: formerly property of the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia; Private collection Great Britain (acquired at Christie's London in 2007) Particularly charming portrait of a child by the Scottish portrait painter Harrington Mann; similar portraits by the artist fetch up to €20,000 on the international auction market This portrait by Harrington Mann was painted in 1913 and depicts a little blond boy in front of a large armchair. With big blue eyes he is meeting the viewer's gaze. A red ball, with which the boy has probably played until just now, is lying on the floor. The finely composed background - here Mann's talent as a stage painter becomes evident - is painted in muted colors. Thus the figure of the boy in a bright white dress and with red lips as well as the colorful toy stand out before the background. Mann's color scheme shows the influence of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, while his bold brushwork is reminiscent of John Singer Sargent. Harrington Mann created numerous portraits of children, which he painted with devotion and a delightful charm. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'Harrington Man 1913'. There is a label of a London antiques dealer with a delivery address for the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Philadelphia attached to the back of the stretcher. It is in good condition consistent with age; there is a small restoration backed with a patch of canvas in the upper center. Examination under UV light reveals spots of retouching. The frame shows light signs of wear. The framed work measures 141.5 x 94.5 cm, the stretcher measures 124.4 x 78.7 cm. Harrington Mann (1864-1937) Harrington Mann studied at the Glasgow School of Art and later at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He continued his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian under the painters Gustave Boulanger and Jules-Joseph Lefebvre. Initially Mann painted primarily fishermen in Yorkshire. From 1885 he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. In the 1890s he gained recognition as a portraitist. In addition, he also worked as a decorative and glass painter. In 1900 the artist moved to London where he enjoyed increasing success with portraits of British nobility and royalty. Moreover in New York, where he opened a studio around the same time, his paintings also became very popular. In 1911 Harrington Mann was a founding member of the National Portrait Society.
