Gered Mankowitz Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1946 -

Gered Mankowitz FRPS (Born 3 August 1946) is an English photographer who focused his career in the music industry. He has worked with a range of artists from The Rolling Stones to Jimi Hendrix, and in other divisions of the photography industry, including fashion, music, advertising, news, and private photography. He works from his own gallery in North London.

Mankowitz was born as the first of four sons on 3 August 1946 in London, England, to the English writer Wolf Mankowitz and Ann Margaret Seligman. After attending multiple schools throughout his education, Mankowitz dropped out of school at 15 years of age, without any proper qualifications. However, his natural photography gifts were discovered on a school trip to the Netherlands by the photographer Tom Blau. Blau offered Mankowitz an apprenticeship, and after a few months on the job, he had worked in all the departments, and began taking assignments. In 1962, Mankowitz began taking photos professionally in Barbados, and when he returned to London, he took a position in the Parisian fashion world, but quickly realized that that style of photography was not for him. In 1963, he broke into the music photography industry, and felt at home being able to work with artists his own age. At the end of that same year, Mankowitz opened his own studio.

          Jimi Hendrix Wearing Hat

          Est: $1,050 - $1,680

Jim Hendrix Sporting a Pink Hat. Gered Mankowitz was born in London, England, on 3rd August 1946. At the end of 1963 Gered opened his first studio, at 9 Masons Yard in the heart of London's West End. On one side was the infamous disco The Scotch of St.James and on the other the art gallery Indica, partly financed by The Beatles and the venue where John Lennon met Yoko Ono. Within a few months Gered had already begun to make a name for himself, and was approached to photograph Marianne Faithful, who had just had a big hit with As Tears Go By. While working closely with Marianne, he got to know her manager and producer Andrew Loog Oldham. In early 1965, Oldham asked him to photograph the Rolling Stones, who he also managed and produced. From this first session came the cover for Out of Our Heads (U.S. title Decembers Children), and as a result he was asked by the Stones to go to America with them on their record breaking 1965 tour. During this 9 week (48 city) tour of the U.S. Gered photographed the Stones both on and off stage. Gered continued working with the Stones as their "official photographer, producing photos for albums (Between the Buttons Got Live If You Want It Big Hits and several others), press and publicity shots taken at home, in the recording studio, on stage, and behind the scenes until 1967, when the band broke off with their manager, Oldham. Through the 1960's Gered continued in the music world working with Oldham at his famous Immediate label, and with many major artists including Jimi Hendrix, Free, Traffic, The Yardbirds, The Small Faces, Soft Machine; and then also through the 1970's with Slade, Gary Glitter, Suzi Quatro, Sweet, Elton John, Kate Bush, Eurythmics, ABC, Duran Duran and many others. Gereds Jimi Hendrix photos are arguably some of the most important in Rock history. Signed by Artist and Numbered. The artwork will be shipped with a Certificate of Authenticity issued by White Cross Arts. -#99 Specifications Artist: Gered Mankowitz Medium: Digital Print Dimensions: 24" x 20" Category: Photography: Color Photography Period: 2000-2009 Comments: Edition of 24 Prints Internal ID: 99
