Mankes, Jan (1889-1920). Vader Mankes, in profiel naar rechts. Woodcut, (1913-1914?), 17,5x15,4 cm., monogrammed "J.M." in the block, numb. "17/60" in pencil, on thin Japanese, from Herdenkingsuitgave 1988/ 1989, Meppel, Galerie "de Jaargetijden", 1989, framed by Hans ANDRINGA. = Posthumously printed by Toon WEGNER from the original block.

It appears that this is a later (unknown?) state, not mentioned by De Groot. The sky in the right upper corner is filled in with horizontal lines; various lines on the branches have been strengthened; extra branches have been added, especially along the left and right side. And most small lines and scratches between the trees and large branches are removed. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE XXXIII.

Mankes, Jan (1889-1920) (by/ after?). Kraai, omhoog kijkend naar een mugje. Drawing, pen and ink, charcoal, white gouache, vague underdrawing in pencil, 12,7x10,8 cm., on thin Japanese. - Mounted on later board; browned; closed tear in right margin. = What would plead for an attribution to the artist, is, first of all, that this drawing is not a direct copy after the print. There are some differences which would point towards a design for the woodcut. One of the main points is the position of the legs in the composition. They extend further than in the woodcut (even beyond the breast of the bird) and touch almost the borderline. The Rijksmuseum holds a preliminary sketch (with the composition in reverse) in which the legs extend similarly. Furthermore there are various small differences in the branches. The details in the head and the feathers in the bird's breast show a more free approach than a normal copyist would. The combined use of pen and ink, charcoal and white gouache is also not uncommon for Mankes. However, the provenance is unclear.

His work makes you want to see it again and again. What he could and did do was give meaning to things that do not stand out, that are secondary. To the 'small world', a world in which there is a lot to experience. Think of a nest with eggs, a book, or a goat: a painting with the latter subject, 'Two goats', was successfully auctioned at Venduehuis Auctioneers The Hague in last May's auction. The small world is elevated to something important in an artistic sense. Mankes' work touches you in a way that does not just focus on the intellect. Mankes himself said: 'Art is that which appeals to your feelings'.Not yet nineteen years old, Jan Mankes (Meppel 1889-Eerbeek 1920) chose free artistry. He took an evening course at the Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague and trained in glass painting at Jan Schouten's studio in Delft. On Sundays, he often walked from Delft to The Hague to study the collections of the Mauritshuis. There, he was impressed by the work of 17th-century Dutch masters such as Johannes Vermeer and Carel Fabritius, and admired 16th-century German painter Hans Holbein. He started painting birds and nests in the dunes of The Hague and its surroundings. And he found inspiration in the book ‘Een inleiding tot het zien van beeldende kunst' (1906) by the Hague art educator H.P. Bremmer. Sometimes he derived examples for his work from the works of art depicted and discussed by Bremmer. It is undeniable that Mankes painted his 'Two dead kestrels' (1909) after seeing a composition by Floris Verster in his 'Dead crows' (1907). He found his work 'intimately pure and equally monumental'. He particularly admired Verster's smooth, detailed painting style from 1904 onwards. Mankes painted 'Two young magpies' in 1909. We see nothing more than an image of two magpies. However: again, the painter turned this into something Jan Mankes-like. He brought something into the work we all love so much. Mankes specialised in animal paintings like many other painters, but he managed to take this genre to a high level. He depicted the two magpies close, very close, to the viewer of the painting. The composition is beautiful, intimate; it is a small, sensitively painted work. He did not just portray the animals, he tried to immerse himself in the subject of the animal to the extreme. Armed with his passion for the subject and tubes of paint, he managed to capture a sense of awe in this painting. It is not pure reality, it is more than what you see. A painting only reveals its secret when you see it in real life. The 'Two young magpies' are only depicted in a black-and-white photo in the literature mentioned. Involuntarily, you sometimes think a depicted work is larger; this painting then turns out to be a small, intimate work. On the computer screen, a work often appears two-dimensional and flat; in real life, you see nuances, and see how delicately the paint has been applied. You see how the painter used a brush with just a few hairs to paint the smallest details. We are very happy with this beautiful work 'Two young magpies'. It was privately owned for almost 100 years, inherited within the family, and now it is here in our viewing rooms. This creates an opportunity for lovers of the Jan Mankes oeuvre to admire the work during one of our viewing days. And it gives art collectors the unique opportunity to acquire this painting for their collection.
