      PEPPINO MANGRAVITE (1896-1978) Summer Pleasures. Oil on canvas. 597x876 mm; 23 1/2x34 1/2 inches. Signed, Mangravite, lower left. 1939. Provenance: Acquired from the estate of the artist; private collection, New York. Mangravite was awarded three mural projects: In 1937 through the Treasury Relief Art Project, (TRAP) he completed a pair of murals for the Hempstead Post Office, Hempstead, NY; Funded by the Treasury Section of Fine Arts, (TSFA) he completed two murals for the Atlantic City Post Office, Atlantic City, NJ; and in 1940 under TSFA he completed Development of Jackson Heights, for the Jackson Heights Station Post Office, Flushing, NY. These murals remain in place accept for the Atlantic City project. The post office was demolished, and the murals are purportedly removed and restored awaiting re-hanging in an alternate government building.

      Described and Photographed by: Amanda HFA VX TKS Lot 4059 Description: A vintage Christmas or Holiday card by Peppino Gino Mangravite (1896-1978), an Italian American artist famous for his participation in the American Scene movement. This card features an abstract, stylized angel-like figure. The card has been laid on paper and then matted and framed in a gold guilded frame molding. It is inscribed at the bottom, reading “Holiday Greetings with Affections to Sylvia and Bob from Gino”. The back of the frame also features an extensive citation and collector notes about the artist written in 1991. The inscription reads “Christmas Card for Sylvia and Bob Warren- 1975 from Peppino Mangravite of West Cornwall, CT, who founded the Dept. of Painting at Columbia University, taught at the Art Institute of Chicago, and exhibited widely. Some of his work is owned by the Whitney Museum of Art NYC. His recorded interviews with Picasso, Matisse, Miro, etc., and his papers are in the Archives of American Art. We owned a quite large painting (oil) of his which he called “Picasso’s Window” and which we gave to the New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT. He and Bill Talbot (we also gave Bill Talbot’s sculpture that we owned to the New Britain Museum of American Art) and, I think, Edward Renouf, sculptor, ____ Bob for membership in the Century Club of New York which Bob greatly enjoyed.       PEPPINO GINO MANGRAVITE American (1896-1978) "Rye Beach" oil on canvas, signed lower right. Signed and titled on the reverse. 25 x 28 Provenance: Dudensing Galleries, New York; D. Wigmore, New York; Collection of Robert Zemeckis and Mary Ellen Trainor, Beverly Hills, California. Exhibitions: Carnegie Institute, 1927. Other Notes: Of Italian descent, Mangravite created poetic works based on personal experience and observation, filtered through his romantic sensibility. His paintings deal more with mood and sensuous effects than with description. Mangravite took classes at the Art Students League, where he worked under Robert Henri, who perhaps invluenced Mangravite to choose themes that were heartfelt and based upon his personal experiences.
