A pioneer of modern Swiss poster art, Mangold's pre-1920s works "have an effect through sophisticated image inventions: simplification and monumentalization of the form, flatness, connection of text and image, staggering of images. In his formative years, Mangold's work reflected the influence of Hans Sandreuter. To announce this upcoming Song Festival, Mangold combines Secessionist design elements and mythology. Arion, the Greek poet who was saved by a dolphin, is depicted in Lake Constance swimming toward Zurich. Soon after this poster was designed, Mangold began working with the inimitable Swiss printing house of Wolfensberger. Wolfensberger, Zürich DESCRIPTION: Mangold, one of Switzerland's most famous poster artists, had an unerring capability of defining moods far larger and more capacious than the putative subjects of his posters. Switzerland declared itself neutral during World War I; all around, Death reigned. Here, in 1917, the Darmstadt (Germany) high grand-ducal chorus is touring St. Gallen, Zürich, Bern, and Basel for a series of "vineyard concerts." The grape leaves are blood-red, symbolizing both death and life. And these red drops descend upon a Modernist frieze of grieving women, joining together the Classical and the Modern need for music as catharsis. Interestingly, as a coda, it appears that Mangold's border design here was later appropriated by Charles Loupot, another Swiss poster artist, as his own artistic signature in the period of 1920-25. Burkhard Mangold's artistic career covered several distinct areas, including painting, stained glass and poster design. In 1905, he began working with the inimitable Swiss printing house Wolfensberger, and soon became one of the pioneers of modern Swiss poster art. This brightly-colored, care-free image is one of his most fluid designs, in which the swirls on the ice indicate the movement of the skaters, who themselves are moving too fast to be completely contained within the poster itself. It is an "audacious and dynamic composition" (Weill p. 122), and "one of the flagship works of Swiss poster art" (Schweiz p. 30). BURKHARD MANGOLD (1873-1950) ROLLSCHUHBAHN IM TONHALLE PAVILLON. 1910. 39 1/2x28 inches, 100 1/4x71 cm. J.E. Wolfensberger, Zurich. Condition A-: repaired tears and creases in margins; creases along unobtrusive horizontal fold; pencil notation in lower margin; pencil notation and ink collection stamp in lower right image. Burkhard Mangold's artistic career covered several distinct areas including painting, stained glass and poster design. In 1905, he began working with the inimitable Swiss printing house Wolfensberger and soon became one of the pioneers of modern Swiss poster art. Here, the roller skaters are depicted without outline, in the style of Ludwig Hohlwein, but Mangold, in an almost impressionist-style involving small dots of color, weaves a collage of different graphic patterns into a graceful image.
