Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Panel for the Great Britain -- The Art of Greeting stamps issued March 24, 1995. From New Orleans to Chicago to New York City, jazz has often been called the only art form to originate in the United States. A merger of ragtime and blues, this unique style of music was influenced by African rhythms, European classical music, gospel and spiritual songs of slaves, as well as American folk music and minstrel show tunes. What developed from these diverse musical styles was a new sound that exhibited strong rhythms and emphasized intense emotions. Early jazz artists include pianists "Jelly Roll" Morton and James P. Johnson. The swing era of the 1930s featured tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins and perpetually popular trumpet soloist Louis Armstrong. In the 1940s Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk developed what later became known as the "bebop" era of jazz, paving the way for the modern jazz movement. Image Size: 15.75 x 11.5 in. • Saul Mandel (1926 - 2011) "Hanukkah"
        May. 17, 2020

        Saul Mandel (1926 - 2011) "Hanukkah"

        Est: $200 - $400

Saul Mandel (1926 - 2011) "Hanukkah" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 32c Hanukkah stamp issued October 22, 1996. A central feature of the Hanukkah celebration is the Hanukkah lamp -- also known as hanukkiyyah. This light-bearing implement has eight branches and a ninth holder for the shammash, or helper candle and is similar to the seven-branched candelabrum (menorah) of the Jewish Tabernacle. The seven-branched menorah held spiritual significance for the Israelites and represented -- among other things -- the seven days of creation. The central shaft was slightly higher than the others to signify the Sabbath. The image of the candelabrum has been found on a variety of archeological remnants including sculptures, paintings, tombstones, bottles, lamps, amulets and rings. Hanukkah lamps have been made from many materials throughout the ages, such as stone, bronze, brass and silver. They have also taken on diverse shapes and forms. Many were circular or mounted against a back-wall, while others were designed in the typical candelabra form. Ornately decorated Hanukkah lamps have also been discovered in many regions of Europe and Asia. Today, the hanukkiyyah and the menorah are used as religious symbols, particularly in synagogue art, including wall paintings, stained glass windows and mosaics. The State of Israel recognizes the menorah as an iconographic symbol signifying Judaism. Image Size: 11.25 x 10 in. Overall Size: 17 x 11 in. Unframed. (B15414)

Saul Mandel (1926 - 2011) "Earth Day - Clean Air"

        Est: $200 - $400

Saul Mandel (1926 - 2011) "Earth Day - Clean Air" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 32c Tree Planting stamp issued April 20, 1995. Polluted air has existed in urban communities for many years. Concern about this condition is a relatively recent development. As we become more aware of the harmful effects of poor air quality on living things, increased efforts are being made to find ways to eliminate or control its causes. For example, scientific studies have proven that when waste gases, such as those released by the burning of fossil fuels in electric power plants and refineries, combine with atmospheric water vapor, certain types of acids are formed and ultimately fall to the ground. This condition, known as "acid rain", can lead to detrimental effects on the ecology. Acidic precipitation has been found to be harmful to trees and other forms of vegetation, resulting in foliage damage and reduction in growth. More obvious signs of air pollution are noted in large urban centers such as Los Angeles, where the brown haze known as "smog" hangs over the city. Another damaging side effect is caused by automobile exhaust. When these noxious gases are released into the air, their presence can cause respiratory distress as well as damage to plant life. The enforcement of auto emissions testing and tighter controls on industry have begun to improve the life-giving air we breathe. Image Size: 9.75 x 8 in. Overall Size: 13.75 x 11 in. Unframed.
