        Bal des Quat'z'Arts.

        Est: $2,500 - $3,000

Beginning in 1892 and last held in 1966, the "Quat'z'Arts"-or "Four Arts Ball," if you prefer-as legend has it, was the first place a striptease was ever performed, by a model named Mona at the Moulin Rouge in 1893. And though later advertisements tended more towards a tribute to the students of the architecture, painting, sculpture and engraving departments-the aforementioned four arts-than to the legendary bawdiness and debauchery of the party itself, the same cannot be said for this Manciet creation, which indulges in the age old axiom that states-and I'm paraphrasing here-that wherever artists congregate nude models are sure to follow. However, this tip-toed palette-holder does have a bit more respect for the arts than a similarly-coifed hater-of-clothes used by Roganeau in his 1927 poster for the event (see PAI-VII, 291), a high-kicking gal who delivers a well-placed pump to a bust of Prudhomme-the symbol of priggery.
