Francis Harris, Cactus Palms, Costa Rica, 1993, oil on canvas. Frances Harris was born in 1913. She emigrated from England to Canada in 1939, and found inspration in the the scenery from the Rockies to the Pacific Coast and the Gulf Islands of British Columbia. The Vancouver School of Art and several British Columbia artists have contributed to Frances's art influences, but Robert Genn and Alex Sutherland have had the greatest influence on her work. Frances Harris preferred oils to paint the vast and powerful British Columbia landscape, honouring the great works by the famous Canadian Group of Seven. Harris was legally visually impaired since the 1990’s, however, even in her late 80's she regularly travelled throughout British Columbia as well as through Italy, France and Mexico. She even hired a small plane to take her flying over the Chilcotin plateau and Similkameen valley, and then, at age 97, she amazed all with a series of eleven new paintings of the BC landscape, painted in 2009 and 2010. Frances Harris passed away in 2017 at 104 years of age.
