Edward Rawson Twice Signed Autograph Document Re: Disappearance of a Man

        Est: $1,000 - $1,200

Edward Rawson Twice Signed Autograph Document Re: Disappearance of a Man 1p, measuring 8.25" x 8.25", Massachusetts Bay, dated August 1, 1665. A clerical copy in Rawson's hand, signed twice "Edw: Rawson Recordr." The document is a statement made by Hudson Leverett, reporting the disappearance of a man in Charlestown. With flattened folds, with separations and small tears repaired on verso. Dampstaining and toning throughout. Uneven edges. Boldly signed. Reading in full: "Hudson Leverett aged 25 years or thereabouts swears on faith; that on the second day of this instant month of Sept., being Saturday early in the morning I having occasion to go to Charlestown I came in the ferry boats to see Salter, the keeper of Boston prisons, I knowing he had been lately sick told him it was very bad for him to sit in the cold so early. He informed I cannot help it, I then asked the reason. He told me that a Frenchman whom he then named Doheson to my best remembrance, had been with him the day before & advised that Capt. Laborne might go w(ith) him to Charlestown to get some pay for Mr. Woodmansby, and said had I let Capt. Laborne go with him, but he is not returned, so I am going to look (for) him, & soon after returning from Charlestown the said Salter told me he could not hear of said Laborne & seemed to be much troubled about it…" Edward Rawson (1615-1693) was born in England but left England to settle in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637. He graduated from Harvard College in 1653 and went on to serve as Public Notary and Register for Newbury from 1638 to 1647. He also served as the first Secretary of the Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1650 to 1686.
