*** Oil on canvas Signed lower left Painted during his trip to Morocco circa 1927. "« M. Mammeri comptera parmi ces probes artistes qui montrent l’Algérie telle qu’elle est, et non vue à travers le prisme menteur d’un orientalisme de pacotille. Son exposition est digne et haute expression » L’écho d’Alger, 8 décembre 1926 A pioneer of Algerian and Moroccan art, Azouaou Mammeri, from Aït Yenni in Algeria, has left his mark on the history of North African art through his exceptional career. He discovered his passion for drawing at the Ecole Normale in Algiers. A self-taught artist, his encounter with the French artists Prosper Picard, Édouard Herzig and Léon Carré played a decisive role in his career. That same year, Mammeri travelled to Morocco, where his cousin, tutor to Prince Mohamed (the future Mohamed V), introduced him to the artistic world. After working as a primary school teacher in Fez, he was appointed drawing teacher at the Muslim college in Rabat in 1919. It was from Rabat that the painter sent two of his first paintings to Paris for an exhibition at the Pavillon de Marsan, which was immediately acquired by the Musée du Luxembourg in Paris. This exhibition marked the beginning of his international recognition. He was awarded a scholarship to study in Spain, from where he brought back an impressive number of paintings. In 1924, for the first time in Algiers, he exhibited his works painted according to the principles of synthesis, which were barely in favour at the time, without pushing them to extremes. He then exhibited at the Cleveland Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and the French Institute, where his talent was celebrated. In 1927, he returned to Morocco, where he founded the Museum of Indigenous Arts in Dar Si Saïd. A talented illustrator, he contributed to works such as Marrakech ou les seigneurs de l'Atlas by Jérôme Tharaud. In 1950, he published Comment je suis venu à la peinture? a poignant account of his difficult beginnings and his tenacious passion for art. After his death in 1966, a retrospective exhibition organised by UNAP brought together around a hundred of his works, celebrating the legacy of an artist who transcended borders and immortalised the soul of Algeria and Morocco through his art."
