MARUJA MALLO (Vivero, Lugo, 1902 - Madrid, 1995) "The Easter Verbena, 1927". Analog photography. The framing includes three graphite drawings by unknown author. Signed by Maruja Mallo and dedicated to Luis Alberti (Rafael Alberti's cousin). Measurements: 15 x 23 cm; 38 x 40 cm (frame). Lot consists of three drawings of unknown authorship and a blank photograph of "La verbena de Pascua", a painting by Maruja Mallo painted in 1927, signed by the artist and dedicated to Luis Alberti, Rafael Alberti's cousin and son of "Lola" the aunt with whom Rafael Alberti began to paint. It should be noted that Maruja Mallo and Rafael Alberti maintained a sentimental relationship for years. Both artists influenced each other greatly in fact, in the work "Sermones y moradas" or "Sobre los ángeles", Alberti is inspired by Maruja's paintings. One of the main representatives of Spanish surrealism, born Ana María Gómez González, Maruja Mallo was trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, and in 1927 she took an active part in the first Vallecas School. In this same decade of the twenties she began to be known through various publications, and in 1928 she exhibited individually for the first time, in the salons of the "Revista de Occidente". In 1932 he traveled to Paris thanks to a pension, and there he participated in the gatherings of André Breton and Paul Éluard, beginning his surrealist period with masterpieces of the movement as "Scarecrow", acquired by Breton himself. On his return to Madrid he participated in the Society of Iberian Artists, and one of his paintings was acquired by the French government for the National Museum of Modern Art. With the outbreak of the war he went into exile in Buenos Aires, where he achieved rapid recognition. From then on, he exhibited his work in Argentina, Paris, Brazil and New York. With the arrival of Peronism Mallo left Argentina and moved to New York, finally returning to Spain in 1965. Here he continued to work successfully, and in the eighties he was awarded the Medal of Merit in Fine Arts and the Plastic Arts Award of Madrid. She is currently represented in the MNCA Reina Sofía, the Artium in Vitoria, the Patio Herreriano in Valladolid and other important collections, both Spanish and international.

MARUJA MALLO (Nursery, Lugo, 1902 – Madrid, 1995) Untitled, 1968. Colored pencils on paper. Attached original copy of Revista de Occidente, No. 68 with the work reproduced on the cover.

      Est: €4,000 - €5,000

MARUJA MALLO (Vivero, Lugo, 1902 - Madrid, 1995) Untitled, 1968. Coloured pencils on paper. Attached original copy of Revista de Occidente, Nº68 with the work reproduced on the cover. Measurements: 7.3 x 9.4 cm: 26 x 28 cm (frame). This work, conceived as the cover of the renowned Revista de Occidente, gives a glimpse of a Maruja Mallo in a stage of artistic maturity, which can be seen in other works by the artist, such as "Protoesquema", also produced in 1968 and in the collection of the Reina Sofía Museum and Art Centre in Madrid. During this artistic period Mallo developed his interest in metaphysical knowledge, exploring the purest forms and turning them almost into a lyrical abstraction. The relevance of this work is heightened by the fact that it was a painting conceived for the Revista de Occidente, founded by Ortega y Gasset. In fact, the perimeter of the piece reveals the printer's work and the artist's indications regarding the measurements and layout of the piece once it was published. Ortega defined Maruja by saying of her "She had four arms, like a goddess". After contemplating the painting "La verbena", the philosopher's admiration was such that he organised a solo exhibition at the headquarters of the Revista de Occidente, helped to boost its sales and on the artist's return from exile, Ortega requested her illustrations for the magazine, as in this particular case. One of the leading representatives of Spanish Surrealism, born Ana María Gómez González, Maruja Mallo trained at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts and in 1927 took an active part in the first Vallecas School. In the 1920s she began to make herself known through various publications, and in 1928 she had her first individual exhibition in the salons of the "Revista de Occidente". In 1932 he travelled to Paris thanks to a pension, and there he took part in the gatherings of André Breton and Paul Éluard, initiating his surrealist period with masterpieces of the movement such as "Espantapájaros" (Scarecrow), acquired by Breton himself. On his return to Madrid he took part in the Society of Iberian Artists, and one of his paintings was acquired by the French government for the National Museum of Modern Art. With the outbreak of the war he went into exile in Buenos Aires, where he achieved rapid recognition. From then on he exhibited in Argentina, Paris, Brazil and New York. With the arrival of Peronism Mallo left Argentina and moved to New York, finally returning to Spain in 1965. Here she continued to work successfully, and in the 1980s she was awarded the Medalla al Mérito en las Bellas Artes and the Premio de Artes Plásticas de Madrid. Maruja Mallo is one of the key figures of the 20th century Spanish art scene. Described by Salvador Dalí as "half angel, half shellfish", the artist formed part of the Generation of '27, she was an independent woman despite the circumstances, initiator together with her friend Concha Méndez of the "hatless" movement, always critical and courageous, criticised for this by some artists such as Buñuel, and nevertheless supported by others such as Ortega y Gasset, who gave her the space of the "Revista de Occidente" for her first exhibition in Madrid. She maintained sentimental relationships with Alberti, Neruda and Miguel Hernández, while always maintaining her independence and freedom, and aroused the admiration in Paris of great names of the time, including the renowned misogynist André Breton, who bought her a painting. Once in exile, she was friends with Andy Warhol and became part of the art scene in New York City. Mallo is currently represented in the MNCA Reina Sofía, the Artium in Vitoria, the Patio Herreriano in Valladolid and other important Spanish and international collections.
