Untitled signed and dated 2018 (right) oil on canvas 30” x 24” (76 cm x 61 cm) WRITE UPInspired by various images and methodologies rooted in the Western Classical tradition, Mallari endeavors to translate the metaphysical aspects of societal existence into palpable, concrete creations. His artistic endeavors revolve around deconstructing our perception of reality, emphasizing how our world is shaped and influenced by images and symbols. In this piece, which remains untitled, Mallari intricately layers his ethereal depiction of classical figures using unconventional mediums. This approach adeptly freezes the artwork in a state of being “in medias res,” immortalizing not only the final creation but also encapsulating the process of conceptualization and eventual decay through visual cues embedded within the artwork. Mallari’s technique not only encapsulates the transient nature of his creations but also captures the fleeting Spatio- temporal essence of his work, providing an imaginative insight nurtured by a nuanced and historical comprehension. Halimuyak Series VI signed and dated 2018 (lower right) oil on canvas 48" x 72" (122 cm x 183 cm) PROVENANCE: Blanc Gallery, Quezon City Love has also been at the heart of a number of philosophical inquiries. Dating back to antiquity, the question of love has eluded even the most enlightened thinkers. For Plato, love is a longing for the eternal and a desire for beauty and truth. He argued that love is a spiritual and intellectual pursuit that aims at transcending the physical world and attaining a higher form of love and understanding. Meanwhile Aristotle posited that love is a mutual and virtuous relationship between two individuals. He emphasized the importance of friendship, companionship, and shared values as the foundation of love. According to Aristotle, love involves a deep connection based on respect, trust, and the pursuit of common goals. But thousands of years later, we are still dumbfounded about its true nature. Perhaps our lack of understanding is not a lack of knowledge per se, but rather a matter of merely looking at only a small part of a bigger whole. Perhaps the true nature of love can only be understood and expressed not only through written and verbal language, but also through the visual as well. Anton Mallari’s Halimuyak series examines the nature of love through a number of specific scenes that are both distinct yet universal. In it, Mallari’s scenes explore themes and gestures of intimacy that elevate them to the phenomenological and the sensual. Though an understanding of love has yet to fully reveal itself to us, what Mallari offers us is assurance. That love, no matter how grand, exists even in the smallest of spaces. (J.D.)

Puesto (Greed) signed and dated 2016 (lower right and verso) oil and acrylic on canvas 60" x 84" (152 cm x 213 cm) Accompanied by a certificate signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot EXHIBITED: Richard Koh Fine Art, Kasalanan (Sins), Kuala Lumpur, June 15 - June 29, 2016 Drawing upon a variety of images and techniques associated with the Western Classical tradition, Mallari seeks to transform the metaphysics of the social condition into a tangible and concrete product. His works deconstruct our reality as a reality formed and governed by images and symbols. In this untitled piece, Mallari layers his ghost-like rendering of classical figures with non-traditional media. In this particular piece titled Puesto (Greed), Mallari takes on a more subtle approach in his commentary. The work features a still-life of an assortment of flowers potted in a decorative vase. At the very center is a bee perched atop of one of the petals. A closer look reveals us a subtle form of chaos and absurdity. The flower arrangement is seemingly in disarray; with petals and stems jammed into a container too small for the intended purpose. Thus if one relates the imagery to the title, one can interpret the work as an artificial arrangement not fueled by a sense of balance or beauty, but by a need to collect, consume, and have control over a natural process. Anton Mallari (b. 1986) Mayabong

        Est: ₱140,000 - ₱182,000

Mayabong signed and dated 2016 (lower right) oil and acrylic on canvas 48" x 36" (122 cm x 91 cm) PROVENANCE: Blanc Gallery, Quezon City A juxtaposition of breathing flesh and outlines of flora, Anton Mallari’s work is a surreal representation of the female portrait luxuriating in the space of a dream or the throes of passion. Wearing a diaphanous white dress that exposes her arms and décolletage, the woman reveals a startling confidence in her body as she is bathed with a pale light. While her face is abstracted with lineation of flowers, her bodily expression is at once a study of openness and vulnerability, as though, just like the flora around her, she is simply waiting for her moment to bloom. This is a captivating painting, one that reveals deftness of hand and subtlety of feeling. (J.D.)

        Est: ₱300,000 - ₱390,000

Anton Mallari (b. 1986) Taklob II signed and dated 2018 (lower right) oil on canvas 24" x 30" (61 cm x 76 cm) Accompanied by a certificate issued by Blanc Gallery and signed by the artist confirming the authenticity of this lot In this piece titled Taklob II we see Mallari’s mastery of different styles and techniques to full effect. In the work, we see what appears to be a woman draped in an elegant gown. Yet Mallari contrasts these two main elements by rendering the dress in a detailed and almost hyper realistic manner, so much so that the fabric seemingly leaps from the canvas. While the woman herself is relatively compared to her garments as they are rendered in a silhouette-like and almost skeletal approach. Beyond the interesting dynamic, Mallari’s conscious decision seemingly directs the viewer to view the piece in relation to itself; that is through its two contrasting elements. The detailed rendering of the dress alludes to a sense of beauty that is created, and given importance by human hands. Meanwhile the underlying female form behind the dress acts as a foil to the seemingly manufactured and finely-detailed allure of the dress. Through the figure, our minds are allowed to run-free and imagine the distinctly human aspects of the figure, but are reigned back due to the existence of the dress; effectively informing us of their relation to the garment. This interplay of contradictory elements opens up a dialogue on beauty and the human elements placed upon our perception of it. (J.D.)
