        Malina, Frank (American/French, 1912-1981) Message, "tableau mobile" or kinetic painting; plastic and painted discs with motors and lights contained within a painted wood light box with the image being 46 3/4 by 30 inches and the overall dimension being 49.5 by 33.25 by 5.5 inches, signed on the obverse Malina in the lower right and on the reverse Malina, Paris, 879/59, Tableau Mobile, "Message." This work is to be included in the upcoming catalog raisonne of Malina's work. An aeronautical engineer by training, Malina is noted for his early work in the field of rocketry and as one of the founders of the famed Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) at Cal Tech University. Unhappy with the use of his research for the development of weaponry, Malina moved to France to work for the newly formed UNESCO branch of the United Nations. In 1953, Malina left UNESCO to become a pioneer and one of the chief proponents of Kinetic art. Concerned about the growing gulf between artists and scientists, Malina went on to found LEONARDO, The International Journal of the Contemporary Artist.

(102.9 x 201.9 x 14.3cm) watch video provenance: Purchased directly from the artist by Mr. and Mrs. Fred Lawrence Whipple. The Estate of Babette S. Whipple, Belmont, Massachusetts. note: This kinetic sculpture was created for Fred Lawrence Whipple, director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory from 1955-73 and accomplished professor of Astronomy at Harvard University. Texas born artist Frank Malina was a pioneer in the field of aeronautics and was the first Director of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. His team at that facility was responsible for the successful launch of the first American rocket into space, the WAC Corporal. In 1951 Malina became head of UNESCO's division of scientific research but left shortly thereafter to pursue an interest in kinetic art while living and working in Paris. His work was widely exhibited and notably included in 'Cybernetics Serendipity,' the first exhibition to explore aspects of computer-aided artwork presented at the ICA in London in 1968.
