      (1869 Kasanka/Gouvernement Samara/Russisches Kaiserreich - 1940 Nizza) Russische Bäuerin (Baba) in Tracht Mit schnellem, breitem, weich-pastosem Duktus gemaltes Werk Maliavins, in dessen Oeuvre Bildnisse russischer Bäuerinnen einen breiten Raum einnehmen. Maliavin studierte ab 1892 an der Akademie in St. Petersburg, ab 1894 bei Ilja Repin. 1895 entstand eines seiner frühesten bekannten Werke - "Bauernmädchen beim Stricken eines Strumpfes", welches von Pavel Tretjakow für seine Galerie erworben wurde. Diese Arbeit ist zugleich das erste Gemälde Maliavins, auf der Rot als seine Lieblingsfarbe zum dominierenden Ton wurde. Maliavin nahm fortan an zahlreichen Ausstellungen teil, reiche Gönner ließen sich von ihm porträtieren. Die Jahre 1895 bis 1899 waren eine Zeit besonders intensiver Produktivität. Maliavins Malstil war unkonventionell - zu hell und aufrührerisch für den damaligen Geschmack. 1900 reiste Maliavin zur Weltausstellung in Paris, wo sein Gemälde "Lachen" gezeigt und mit einer Goldmedaille ausgezeichnet wurde (später vom Museum für moderne Kunst in Venedig erworben). Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Russland lebte er hauptsächlich auf einem Hof nahe dem Dorf Axinjino bei Rjasan und widmete sich bäuerlichen Motiven in teilw. großen, epischen Dimensionen wie sein größtes Gemälde "Wirbelwind" (1906). 1908-1915 stellte Maliavin kaum aus, da er heftig von der offiziellen, konservativen Kritik angegriffen wurde. 1922 emigrierte Maliavin nach Frankreich, wo er zunächst in Paris, in den 1930er Jahren in Nizza ansässig wurde. Auch viele seiner dort entstandenen Gemälde hatten weiterhin einen thematischen Bezug zur russischen Heimat Maliavins. 1924 stellte Maliavin seine Werke mit großem Erfolg in der Galerie Charpentier in Paris aus. We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her scholarly advice. The sitter is the wife of Carl August Wickander (Berlin 1885-1952 Lisbon), a Swedish industrialist and chairman of the Swedish Air Transport Association. The present lot constitutes one of the best examples of the artist’s late work and was created at the same time as the portrait of her husband (cf. Bukwoskis, Stockholm, 26 November 2009, lot 1131).

Parallelamente studierà però da autodidatta, concentrandosi sullo studio dal vero e sulla realizzazione di ritratti, finché verrà scoperto dallo scultore Beklemisev che gli permetterà di entrare all'Accademia delle Arti di San Pietroburgo, dove si trasferirà nel 1892, come allievo di Ilya Efimovic Repin. È in questo periodo che si delineano i suoi interessi e quelle che saranno le tematiche da lui predilette: il mondo contadino e la ritrattistica. Parteciperà nel 1900 all'Esposizione universale di Parigi con il dipinto Il riso che gli varrà la medaglia d'oro, poi acquistato dal Museo d'Arte Moderna di Venezia. Dal 1903 prenderà parte alle mostre dell'Unione degli Artisti Russi e nel 1906 sarà nominato Accademico. Ma la sua fortuna continuerà anche dopo la Rivoluzione, le sue origini contadine si allineavano perfettavemente all'ideale del pittore proletario del nuovo regime Sovietico, gli saranno infatti presto commissionati i ritratti di Lenin, Trotsky e altri eminanti leaders bolshevichi. Tuttavia, Maljavin non si sentirà mai a suo agio nella nuova Russia sovietica, decidendo di trasferirsi prima a Riga e poi a Parigi. Inizierà così ad esporre alle principali mostre internazionali, a Venezia nel 1901 e nel 1907, a Roma nel 1911, poi a Praga, Parigi, Pittsburg e Filadelfia. Organizzerà mostre personali in tutta Europa, Belgrado e Praga nel 1933, a Nizza nel 1934 e nel 1937 e infine Londra e Stoccolma nel 1935. Tuttavia, la sua arte sarà sempre legata al mondo russo, la sua principale ispirazione era proprio l'ambiente contadino in cui era nato e cresciuto, sempre caratterizzato da un forte vigore colorisrico. We are grateful to Dr. Olga Sugrobova-Roth for her scholarly advice. The sitter is the wife of Carl August Wickander (Berlin 1885-1952 Lisbon), a Swedish industrialist and chairman of the Swedish Air Transport Association. The present lot constitutes one of the best examples of the artist’s late work and was created at the same time as the portrait of her husband (cf. Bukowskis, Stockholm, 26 November 2009, lot 1131).
