Kazimir Severinovich Malevich[nb 1] (23 February [O.S. 11] 1879[1] – 15 May 1935) was a Russian avant-garde artist and art theorist, whose pioneering work and writing had a profound influence on the development of non-objective, or abstract art, in the 20th century.[2][3][4][5] Born in Kyiv to an ethnic Polish family, his concept of Suprematism sought to develop a form of expression that moved as far as possible from the world of natural forms (objectivity) and subject matter in order to access "the supremacy of pure feeling"[6] and spirituality.[7][8] Malevich is considered to be part of the Ukrainian avant-garde (together with Alexander Archipenko, Vladimir Tatlin, Sonia Delaunay, Aleksandra Ekster, and David Burliuk) that was shaped by Ukrainian-born artists who worked first in Ukraine and later over a geographical span between Europe and America.[9][10]
Early on, Malevich worked in a variety of styles, quickly assimilating the movements of Impressionism, Symbolism and Fauvism, and after visiting Paris in 1912, Cubism. Gradually simplifying his style, he developed an approach with key works consisting of pure geometric forms and their relationships to one another, set against minimal grounds. His Black Square (1915), a black square on white, represented the most radically abstract painting known to have been created so far[11] and drew "an uncrossable line (…) between old art and new art";[12] Suprematist Composition: White on White (1918), a barely differentiated off-white square superimposed on an off-white ground, would take his ideal of pure abstraction to its logical conclusion.[13] In addition to his paintings, Malevich laid down his theories in writing, such as "From Cubism and Futurism to Suprematism" (1915)[14] and The Non-Objective World: The Manifesto of Suprematism (1926).[15][16]
Malevich's trajectory in many ways mirrored the tumult of the decades surrounding the October Revolution (O.S.) in 1917.[17] In its immediate aftermath, vanguard movements such as Suprematism and Vladimir Tatlin's Constructivism were encouraged by Trotskyite factions in the government. Malevich held several prominent teaching positions and received a solo show at the Sixteenth State Exhibition in Moscow in 1919. His recognition spread to the West with solo exhibitions in Warsaw and Berlin in 1927. From 1928 to 1930, he taught at the Kyiv Art Institute, with Alexander Bogomazov, Victor Palmov, Vladimir Tatlin and published his articles in a Kharkiv magazine, Nova Generatsia (New Generation).[18] But the start of repression in Ukraine against the intelligentsia forced Malevich return to modern-day Saint Petersburg. From the beginning of the 1930s, modern art was falling out of favor with the new government of Joseph Stalin. Malevich soon lost his teaching position, artworks and manuscripts were confiscated, and he was banned from making art.[19][20] In 1930, he was imprisoned for two months due to suspicions raised by his trip to Poland and Germany. Forced to abandon abstraction, he painted in a representational style in the years before his death from cancer in 1935, at the age of 56.
Nonetheless, his art and his writing influenced contemporaries such as El Lissitzky, Lyubov Popova and Alexander Rodchenko, as well as generations of later abstract artists, such as Ad Reinhardt and the Minimalists. He was celebrated posthumously in major exhibits at the Museum of Modern Art (1936), the Guggenheim Museum (1973) and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (1989), which has a large collection of his work. In the 1990s, the ownership claims of museums to many Malevich works began to be disputed by his heirs.[20]

Occasionally, the Auctioneer may eliminate or reject an Internet bid, or the auctioneer may reopen a lot after the close of the live internet bidding. In this case, we may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via the internet, you agree that RBFineArts CFL Inc. may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Buyers should assume that all listed items are reserved unless otherwise stated. We reserve the right to bid on behalf of consignors up to, but not more than, the reserve to protect against selling at a price below the reserve. This will be accomplished as necessary by a proxy placing successive bids, or bids in response to buyer's bids. If any dispute arises after the sale, the RBFineArts CFL Inc Auction Services sale record is final and conclusive. || PICKUP: Upon pick up the buyer, or their contracted third-party pick-up company, will be presented with a release stating that they acknowledge all items purchased were available to be inspected and by signing confirm they find no fault with the items and agree to all terms and conditions presented by RBFineArts CFL inc. auction including the condition of the items and that all sales are final. Kazimir Malevich (1879–1935) was a Russian avant-garde artist and the founder of the Suprematist movement, which sought to express the spiritual and emotional essence of art through pure geometric forms and colors. Malevich is best known for his iconic painting "Black Square" (1915), which is considered one of the seminal works of abstract art.Born near Kiev, Ukraine, Malevich studied art in Moscow and was initially influenced by movements such as Cubism and Futurism. However, he eventually developed his own unique style, which he called Suprematism. Suprematist art aimed to transcend the material world and express pure feeling and sensation through the use of basic geometric shapes, particularly squares, circles, and rectangles, arranged in dynamic compositions."Black Square," painted in 1915, is perhaps Malevich's most famous work and a landmark in the history of abstract art. It consists of a simple black square on a white background, devoid of any representational imagery or narrative content. Malevich described the painting as a "zero of form," symbolizing the beginning of a new era in art.In addition to "Black Square," Malevich created a series of Suprematist paintings and compositions that explored the possibilities of geometric abstraction. His works often featured bold colors, sharp lines, and dynamic compositions that conveyed a sense of movement and energy.Malevich was also a prolific writer and theorist, publishing several manifestos and essays on art and aesthetics. He believed that art had the power to transform society and advocated for a radical break with traditional forms of representation in favor of pure abstraction.Despite facing persecution and censorship under the Soviet regime, Malevich continued to produce innovative and experimental artworks until his death in 1935. His pioneering contributions to abstract art and his revolutionary ideas about the nature of artistic expression continue to inspire artists and thinkers around the world. Measures 37.5 x 44.5.

KAZIMIR MALEVICH (Kiev, 1878 - St. Petersburg, 1935). "Sportsman." Multiple from an original of 1931. Painted wood. Measurements: 49 x 14 x 10 cm. Manifold belonging to the iconic "Sportsmen" series, created by Malevich in 1931 in neo-suprematist style. Malevich had arrived at suprematism after an arduous process of reduction of the forms to a geometric essentialism. In 1915 he published his manifesto "From Cubism and Futurism to Suprematism: The New Realism in Painting", whose discourse would be illustrated with his culminating work: "White on White". In his opinion, art should be built from geometrically determined forms, such as the square, the rectangle, the triangle and the circle. But, in the 1930s, he returned to figuration (a figuration that nevertheless did not disregard suprematism), a period in which he created the series of "Deportistas" (Sportsmen). The figures of the "Sportsmen" collection were made and hand-painted in the Russian post-cubist style by one of the founders of abstraction. Russian painter. After studying art at a private academy in Moscow, he first painted impressionist type paintings to evolve soon towards a primitivism inspired by Matisse's fauvism and towards a tubular style similar to Fernand Léger. Kazimir Malevich participated with works of this type in several exhibitions inside and outside Russia; in his travels he met the cubism of Picasso and Braque and the futurism of Umberto Boccioni and Gino Severini, which inspired him creations of cubist formal fragmentation combined with multiplication of the futurist image. But Malevich wished to establish the supremacy of the pure sensibility of simple forms in the figurative arts, and with this aim he founded the Suprematist movement, which became known in 1915 through the work Black Square on a White Background. From then on he alternated works of absolute austerity, such as the black series, with others of greater colorful animation and more dynamism and, on occasions, endowed with a certain sensation of depth. Towards 1918 he leaned towards the most absolute austerity with the series White on white. Malevich abandoned painting to devote himself to teaching and writing and to expound his ideas on art. He taught at the Moscow and Vitebsk academies and at the National School of Applied Arts in Moscow, and directed the Institute for the Study of Artistic Culture in Leningrad. Simultaneously, he designed three-dimensional structures that exerted a great influence on Soviet constructivism. Kazimir Malevich played a fundamental role in the development of the avant-garde: creator, together with Piet Mondrian, of geometric abstraction and inspirer of the work of El Lissitzky and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, he was the starting point for the later evolution of European abstract art, as well as graphic design. The best collection of his work is preserved in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
