"Ramli Malek is born in 1943 in the state of Pahang. Possibly drawing influece from his birthplace, the artist looked to the old-world charm of village houses on stilts as his subject for his painting. Just as depicted in the painting, stilt houses are usually built on water. Stilts are the main characteristic of a typical Malay kampung house. The monotonous use of palette also creates an illusion of these ho t a dim backdrop akin to sunset lighting."

Ramli Malek would have been a great batik artist with an impressive body of works had he not died in a drowning accident when he tried to save his cousin. It was during a fishing trip off Teluk Bain in Cherating, near Club Mediteranee, on September 17, 1982. He was said to be skilled in hand-painting and block-painting.In this monochromatic oil on canvas, Ramli showed off another aspect of his skills, playing on the mirror image of an alcove complete with what looked like a waterfall. Few knew him or how good he was, although he was then (1970) concentrating more on the commercial production of batik in his factory in Kampung Tanah Putih, just outside Kuantan, Pahang.Ramli graduated from the Bradford College of Art in Britain 1964, in Fabric Design, and had a solo in Manchester. He had a three-year practical at the Mara Handicraft Centre in Terengganu before he set up his factory.
