          • Wladimir Jegorowitsch Makowskij, Young Peasant Woman with a Basket of Apples
            May. 16, 2024

Wladimir Jegorowitsch Makowskij, Young Peasant Woman with a Basket of Apples

            Est: €25,000 - €30,000

Signed in Cyrillic and dated lower left: V. MAKOWSKY / 1872 Vladimir Egorovitch Makovsky painted this portrait of a Russian peasant woman in a completely unsentimental way. She is shown sitting on a wooden bench, her hands resting on her lap, her gaze calmly directed at the viewer, with a basket of apples next to her. The early work was created in 1872, shortly after Makovsky joined the "Peredvizhniki" (Russian for "Wanderers"), one of the most important secessionist groups in 19th century Russia, which was founded in 1870. Makovsky paints his model with a subtly contemplative realism, without creating a sentimental genre picture. It was not until 1861 that serfdom was abolished in Russia under Tsar Alexander II, making the peasants independent and free individuals. The Peredvizhniki group was supported by Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov (1832-1898), who purchased numerous works for his gallery. This most influential Russian gallery owner of the 19th century had already collected works by Makovsky during his lifetime. Makovsky's "Young Peasant Woman" was in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow until 1932, when it was sold. The painting also bears a stamp of the Rumyantsev Museum, Moscow, where it was probably kept until 1925. The painting has been in German family ownership for several generations. We would like to thank Prof Elena Nesterova, St Petersburg, for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work (written correspondence dated 21st December 2023). The group of the Peredwishniki opposed the idealising tendencies of academic painting, which was only accessible to the higher social classes. In keeping with their democratic and socially reformist understanding of art, artists such as Makovsky selected their own motifs and gave them a new status. The present painting depicts a simple girl from the lowest class of the Russian people.

A RUSSIAN 19TH C OIL PAINTING ATTR TO VLADIMIR MAKOVSKY

            Est: $3,000 - $4,000

An oil on board genre painting attributed to Vladimir Makovsky (Russian, 1846 - 1920) and dated from the second half of the 19th-century. The painting depicts a conflict scene with two men and a woman in a room. One of the men grabs the woman from the table. Possibly the painting depicts a scene of a bride kidnapping traditional for the Bukovina Region. The characters are dressed in the traditional Ukrainian peasant costumes common to the region of Bukovina. The woman wears a shirt named 'khlopianka' or 'boycut,' a wrap-around striped overskirt, a sash that holds the overskirt in place, and a linen headdress. The man wears a high lamb fur hat, a long blouse, an embroidered waistcoat, and red pants. On his feet, there are white wool socks decorated with red embroidery and leather peasant sandals. The painting is unsigned.

            RUSSIAN PAINTING BY MAKOVSKY

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

VLADIMIR EGOROVICH MAKOVSKY (Russian 1846-1920) A Muzhik in Red Tunic- a study Oil on canvas laid down Signed lower right 13 inches x 9.5 inches (33 x 24 cm) Comparision: The offered painting would appear to be an oil sketch for the seated figure in the watercolor painting by Makovsky titled Barbers Along the Volga River, signed and dated 1896. See: I. Verkhovskaya, Drawing and Watercolors in Russia: Second Half of the 19th Century, Moscow, Palace Editions, 2007, page 121 where illustrated the painting which clearly shows the same figure as the offered lot. Lot is accompanied by a copy of the above referenced book. Makovsky took regular (annual) painting trips throughout Russia during the course of his illustrious career. In the mid of 1890s he traveled along the Volga River. The artist was fascinated with the simplicity of peasant life, seasonal workers and bargemen. As a result of this trip he created a series of paintings, color sketches and drawings with the background of Volga landscapes. Among Makowsky's biographers there is a belief that these series mirror the literary works of Maxim Gorky. Strangely enough there is one particular short story by Gorky named "About the unfortunate shaving experience” (printed in Nizni Novgorod paper, 22nd September 1896). In this particular story Gorky shares a comic experience with a very talkative barber who happens to be very critical of the works of the writer. Therefore we can imagine the colorful character of the Barber "Who loved literature, singing birds, and intellectual conversations, and when he shaves he talks and the man listens to him and forgets that along with the beard and mustache, his nose, ears and lips can be shaved off to.” It is no wonder that people had a nickname for haircutters and barbers schelkach (entertaining) for that was the way for them to earn an extra tip from customers.
